NLC Strike: Lawmakers’ Salaries Not Enough – Akpabio by ebukajay184(op): 3:35pm On Aug 01, 2023
Nigeria's Senate President, Godswill Akpabio said salaries of members of the National Assembly were not enough to take care of demands from their constituents, IGBERETV reports

Akpabio made the statement on Monday, while contributing to the debate on a motion sponsored by Abdulraman Kawu Suleiman, member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) representing Kano South, on the need to avert impending strike planned by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Akpabio said lawmakers’ earnings were too inadequate to cater for the volume of requests from various constituents represented in the National Assembly.

While admitting that hardships associated with the removal of subsidy on petroleum products were enormous, Akpabio said there was need for the people to be more patient with government while steps were being taken to ameliorate sufferings of the people.

In defending his motion, Kawu said “the strike would cripple the country as movement would be severely curtailed as commercial transport operators would withdraw their services, while markets, schools and healthcare facilities would be forced to shut down.”

Kawu said the action could heat up the polity when it occurred, and the gains from the strike would be far below the costs to either of the parties in conflict.

He said,“The strike threat by the NLC, if not averted, could plunge Nigeria into deeper economic woes, dislocate businesses, hunger, frustration, more hardship that would lead to unquantified financial losses and reduce Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“NLC strike is also a bad reputation for the Nigerian economy and the educational system because it portrays the country in a bad light to the external world and discourages foreigners from coming to do business or study in Nigeria,” Kawu said.

After the debate, the Senate mandated its leadership to interface between the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Federal Government in order to avert strike.

When this man was a governor

He wasn’t this heartless I mean any Akwaibomites rooted and re-elected him

But since he went federal things has changed

It seems loyalty comes with selfishness and self centeredness

Like you must submit your soul and jettison humanity to work with APC

I think revolution is brewing gradually cos what the protests all over the country is brewing will be too much for these foolish and uncouth politicians. We are talking of the sustainability of the masses, these people are talking about their pocket. Majority of them have milked the country dry already. Akpabio was a two time governor, a minister, once a senator and still he is talking of salary not enough. If the gods want to ruin someone, they first made him mad and that's what is happening to this Akpabio. He will surely walk naked very soon.

Akpabio is a thief.

A law makers salary that can comfortably pay 100 married men with families, he’s just making mockery of the common man.

Like they are using their personal money to take care of their constituents.

Akpabio denied mocking the poor with the Let the poor breathe motion that was moved on the floor of the Senate last week. But saying lawmakers are underpaid is a testament to the fact that he is really mocking the poor

Akpabio as Senate President will do Tinubu's government more harm than good.

His utterance are coming off as insensitive and insulting on the masses.

Re: NLC Strike: Lawmakers’ Salaries Not Enough – Akpabio by Celepope: 3:42pm On Aug 01, 2023
To be fare to these guys, their salaries aren’t enough to take care of the demand and needs of their constituents. You need to see how people queue up in front of their gates whenever they go back to their constituency with various forms of monetary demands. Mind you the more hardship the members of their constituency face, the more demand they will be exposed to. These guys make more money based on the committees they head or belong to. Anyways that doesn’t mean their salaries should be increased though because that will be immoral.
