Has anyone ever noticed that countries don't expose the propeller of their submarines? They are often hidden in images. Most times, militaries don't even allow photographers to take images of their submarines from the back or when they're surfaced. In this case, we can see Russia covering it with some material.

If you're wondering why, it's because of something called sonar.

Radar doesn't work underwater, so militaries use sonar instead. While radar uses radio waves, sonar uses sound waves. So a ship, submarine, ground or underwater station, or aircraft will send sound waves into the ocean and listen to the sound that returns. If the sound that returns is different from what they sent out and expect to return, they automatically know there is something out there.

The propeller of the submarine makes sounds that can be captured by sonar. And if a country knows the size of a submarine's propeller and the speed it turns, they will be able to adjust their sonar to look for the sound of that propeller, allowing them to detect the presence of the submarine. To avoid this, militaries hide the propellers of their submarines.
