This happened sometime last year and I was going back to school. I entered a keke that was supposed to take me to the park from my street.

Now, I have a routine of saying, “I cover myself with the blood of Jesus” whenever I want to do something or go anywhere. Lol…. I learnt that from my mum another thing I learnt was, “Holy Spirit come and go with me or come and do this with me”. I never knew the importance of these spoken words until that day.

Now, as an African child or rather as a Nigerian, you should understand what it feels like when you enter a “Keke” and you find yourself in the middle of two other guys. This was my case. So I entered this “keke” and I was alone, then we moved forward,

The driver stopped to pick up one man, and moved a bit before he picked another man. This was disturbing for me. But I didn’t want to panic, so I muttered, “Blood of Jesus cover me”. While we were going, the one by my right started speaking French to me (he thought I didn’t understand French😂, me wey carry first position for secondary school). I just smiled and pretended like I couldn’t understand. I avoided anything that will make me bring out my phone.

Then the other guy was like, “seems like this guy is not from around here” I was like I think so. The French guy then chipped in, responding affirmatively that he’s from Togo, he came to do business and he got scammed. His dollars were taken. As soon as I heard scammed, it then occurred to me that omo, Chinenye, you don enter. I just kept quiet. The guy started his French conversation again, looking at me, he then asked, “Comment tu t'appelles ?” And I was like j’mappelle…. Then he surprisingly stopped me, was like, “so you understand French?” I kept quiet. In my mind I was like, even a primary school child will know what that meant. The other guy then started convincing me to follow them somewhere to catch the scammers. While he was talking, I don’t know if he was mixing up some incantations cause i didn’t understand some part. I was like it’s not possible, I can’t follow you. I didn’t know why the man looked surprised but at that point, I wanted to get down from the “keke” to enter another one.

The guy continued talking in words I didn’t understand, then he made attempt to tap me, dunno if it was reflex but I almost slapped him and told him not to touch me again.

After this happened, the driver was then like, “sister you go come down oo”. Tbh, I was really scared for my life, but I boldly told him, I’ve not gotten to where I was headed. I could notice the 2 guys I was seated with exchanging glances. The driver then said again that he’s no more going, that he wants to pick something he forgot and can’t carry me back. So I was like okay, “drop me here”. When he stopped, I tried paying him, he rejected which was very strange. Hmmm I wasn’t having any of that. “Oga please take your money”, he said I should carry my wahala and go.

I found a way to drop the money close to him and left. Tbh I still didn’t understand what happened.
When I got to the park, I explained to my mum what happened. She was like, “Thank God”.
That was when she told me that they were fraud guys, but I didn’t fall for their charms. If not, they would have carried me somewhere and drained me of my cash and valuables.

Indeed the Blood of Jesus covered me that day.
I still reflect on that day and I always wondered why they didn’t take my money. But I’m grateful God saved me.

Wow! How come you didn’t know this very old format of almost 20 years?

This style of fraud has been exposed many times here on nairaland. I’m glad you didn’t fall though.

It's been the same pattern for a very long time. It's either they ran away with oga's money which is always in the "booth" or they claim to be here for business and have only dollars with them..
I didn't know they use keke until recently when I had an encounter with them. The moment the guy beside me came down and paid with dollar, I knew I was in danger already and I just spoke with the rider in a polite and strict tone and to the Glory of God, he angrily told me to get down..

I've encountered them thrice, first at iyana oworo, they dropped me by one express around palm grove. I noticed the man was from my state from his accent so I pleaded with him, speaking our language that I wasn't interested in the money..
2nd and 3rd experiences were on Ailegun road and Ori oke bus-stop respectively. One dropped me along airport road, while the other dropped me before the next bus stop.

My eyes have seen shege in this Lagos sha undecided

I have never encountered these people and I pray never to meet them.
Maybe because keke is not my thing and I hate along…
It is either I’m boarding a vehicle from their park or I’m using bolt or drop.

Even if I mistakenly find myself inside keke…I no dy gree stay middle….can’t really remember the last time entered or share keke seat with someone.

That's what you we wia told by the colonial masters.

It's the lack of friendship culture that's making youths become Cultist to make up.

Friendship is a form of defence... If you are in a group, evil people will look the other way..

No doubt friendship has its down side, but it gurantes safety...

Never work alone.
