Importing rice can fund Nigerian local rice production.... It's very easy

Allow rice import tax it use it to fund improvement of local rice farms, mills and seed development
How do you achieve that through land bordershuh

CG Adeniyi just pick up the keys and open up the boarder

This is the only sensible thing to do.

Customs should open the border unconditionally and let Nigerians buy rice at a cheaper rate. I don't understand the jargons the Customs boss is saying.
Milk is expensive, vegetable oil, poultry products, even ordinary toothpaste produced locally is almost a thousand naira!!
Nigerians are fucking starving!! angry angry
What are you saying? Where u take buy bag for 40k in June.

The price rises from 31/32k to 41/42k last two weeks.

It simply means we will further weaken the naira because we are selling to buy other countries currency.

The question that should be raised is

Why is rice expensive?
We produce locally, why the blame on exchange rate?
Who are the people sabotaging the current situation the country is facing?
Do we have enough paddy rice to meet demand?
What can we do right now to cushion the effect of dollar to naira
Nigeria is a very difficult place to do business so it is better to buy from outside and sell to people at moderate cost than deceive ourselves, you don't need to close any boarder if you do the right thing to stimulate local production. No wise business man will establish business in an economy where you can't get adequate electricity, double taxation here and there, insecurity, bad roads, lack of access to financing, etc, even if they do such costs will definitely be transferred to the final consumers which is me and you.

The border should be opened to traders while the customs should intensify intelligence towards arms smuggling and other illegal activities.

This would reduce the over reliance on the naira/dollar trade.
We can now use other trade currency.
You are very correct.. I kw Nigerians on der own like shortcuts to mk more profit but it's the custom and gov responsibilities to put measures in place.

The reason people smuggling rice is because they can take the risk sale at enough high price to cover the expenses

It's cost around $350 dollars to import a ton of rice from say Thailand... Rice plus container shipment... At today exchange of 950 that's 16,000 roughly... It's cheaper in cotonu because cost of shipping yo Benin republic is cheaper...

They buy 15k in Benin... Pay bribe to smuggle it say 15k per bag they can sale 40k n still make profit...

So allow import through land border and sea borders with a tax of 70% that's 16k tax 11k ...

This would make smuggling unattractive
Tax on a container of rice 40 ft would be 6.3 million

From my calculation we can make over 1 trillion from tax from imported rice

100 billion goes to customs to strangle smuggling make it more and more difficult

500 billion goes into improve rice verity development and availability and 400 billion into loans to rice farms in terms of import and machineries

Do this for 5 years and local rice producers can produce a ton for rice for say 100k thats $100 ... Which would make them far cheaper than imported rice... Importation dies a natural death

Like Peter obi say it's easy not rocket science

Our borders were closed but thousands of tankers of fuel were being smuggled across the border daily.

Many Nigerians don't understand the impact the war on Niger will have on security in the north and on food supplies to the South. Already we are experiencing daily price increases in food from the north because of the insecurity over there talk more when we embark on a full scale war with Niger.

the price of rice depends on the variety and brand. The one I bought increased from 40k in June to 48k just this week.

The border should be open for importation of essential items like foods especially rice, but then it may be difficult to monitor the inflow of arms and ammunitions into the country.
Honestly it is just a difficult decision to take, considering the fact that our border is so over porous.
Don't even know if Customs have CCTV cameras flooding kilometers to the various borders? This will help their work a lot.

Demand of more than 200m people is more than supply so suppliers few goods( rice) Vs many Nigerians hungry for rice as a staple commodity makes suppliers to increase the price of rice coupled with lack of basic infrastructure and greed.

Don't you know border reopening will reduce pressure on naira against the almighty Dollar

Traders will opt for other currency to trade with Dollar

Importing toks vehicles from Cotonou will save our currency

It'll never be better for buhari for shutting southern borders and left the landlocked northern borders Open, Buhari killed lot of Business in the south with that clueless, needless policy

The border closure has dealt a big blow to the Nigerian economy. Of course, the neighboring countries may have been hurt too but Nigeria is the worst hit.

Bad policy...

You guys will just be saying what you dont know. Benin republic is a peaceful nation, so smuggling arms from there will be difficult. Most borders in the north are open but you think is okay to close southern border

Which kind advice is this for God sake 😭😭😭. I help a cousin of mine to book a flight yesterday from Abuja to London and her airline tax is 556k. Nigeria government is making alot of money on tax and you still want them to tax us more. People are suffering and we all need foods . I propose no tax on foods because is essential for everybody. Nigeria government is making alot of money on tax on product and services already

Now I have been vindicated on this border matter. Check my signature to see where I stand on this border closure. So many people then we're shouting close the border closure the border not knowing that they are exposing themselves to hunger.
The truth that many of you don't know is that most of the agriculture produce are from Benin such as rice, tomatoes, vegetable oil, palm oil from Ghana, pineapple, coconut from Ghana. These goods we can't produce them for now because we have abandoned agriculture for white collar jobs now we are moving to tech. But Benin they are still in the field farming.
The bad news now is that if we open our border Benin aren't ready to do business with Nigeria because since the closure they have made foreign buyers from china, turkey and Holland of which they earn foreign currency. Now their cfa is higher than naira. So what do they need our naira for?
