ECOWAS Parliament divided over planned military action in Niger

The Economic Community of West African States Parliament was divided over the actions that should be taken to address the Niger coup.

While some parliamentarians of ECOWAS were in support of military action against the Niger junta, others were against it.

Twenty-two parliamentarians took part in the virtual extraordinary meeting on Saturday to discuss the political crisis in Niger Republic.

While some of the parliament spoke in support of dialogue and diplomacy, others called for actions that would actually stem the rise in military government within the region.

Details later…..

Other African country presidents have priorities and targets that should be met due to the promises they made to their citizens

And you expect them to leave the needed basic human needs by her citizens to embark on a useless war

Unlike Tinubu that had no manisesfo, never attended a debate to let us know his plans for us, never told us how he would tackle our needs

Only thing that drug lord was concerned was it is his turn

Toothless bulldog

Trying to use war to scatter tribunals attention from returning the stolen mandate

They should jettison the idea.

You can not use war to bring about peace.

I don't understand why Tinubu is carrying this Niger junta matter on his head like firewood.

Niger isn't the first west African country to experience a coup in the last 5 years and would certainly not be the last.

The reality here is that Nigeria doesn't have the resources to sustain a war.

War is expensive. Hitler lost WW2 cos he invaded the Solvet Union and as his war with the Solvet Union prolonged, he couldn't afford to feed and supply his over 3m German soldiers fighting on the Eastern from. Most German soldiers in starlingard starved to death. Many ran out of ammunition and surrendered cos they could not be supplied.

If Tinubu sends 10,000 soldiers to Niger. He shouldn know that feeding 10,000 soldiers for just 1 month, replenishing exhausted ammunition, artillery, tanks, fuel for the armoured divisions, magazines, and you'll still pay their salaries, medications...etc. You'll agree with me that the expenses would run into billions of naira.

If the war escalates to like 6-8 months, Nigeria wouldn't be able to sustain itself cos it would have exhausted all it's finances on the war.

And the west who are urging him to go on wouldn't support him with a penny. So we would finish our resources on a war that isn't our business, loose thousands of service men, become dead broke...and for what, to please the west?

Somebody should talk sense inside that man's head.

While it is a noble idea to do whatever that is necessary to discourage military rule in the subregion, Nigeria government obsession with military action to solve Niger's internal problem at this time when Nigeria herself is gripped with strife and general hopelessness is ill advised.
ECOWAS can and should only put pressure on the junta to return power to a democratic rule in the shortest possible time as that's the only viable option. Negotiate for Bazoum's release so he can go and enjoy his loot in exile, maybe in Daura-Katsina as returning him to power is practically impossible given the odds.

Nigeria is presently grounded and the president seem not to fully understand what he is doing. Face your country that is near collapse.
All the people that are still clapping for this current government, I don't even understand whether they don't go out to work to earn a living or whether they are just buffoons. Inflation is suffocating almost everybody but the buffoons keep clapping so I am constrained to wonder if they don't go out there to work

Sentiments apart, ECOWAS have a new treaty signed also by Niger Republic to ensure no country is allowed to be distabilised by anti-democractic elements. The standing force ECOMOG was therefore not disbanded and can be used at any time.
Should any Soldier in his right senses think he knows better- let him join a political party, contest, win then bring about the change he thinks his society deserve..
Soldiers are to protect not to govern...
So whether u like it or not... Niger should be invaded and the Junta made to dance to the song they sing.
Peace be unto u

How many countries signed the treaty and how many ratified it? Only six ratified it and Niger is not among them. Besides, part of the countries forming Saint didn't even sign the treaty so one wonders what right they have to invade Niger..
