Very unfortunate for the poor woman,but nevertheless in these harsh and perilous times,one doesn't need to be ignorant and negligent.
Before you engage the services of wheelbarrow pusher,ensure that you have made all the necessary purchases you need.Buy the smaller size food items first,then the bulky ones .
This way,no wheelbarrow pusher,no matter how criminally minded can abscond with your foodstuffs, because your eyes will be on him as he moves.

Their way! that is the reason they fasten their movement. People who employ their services have to be smartly watchful. On no account should you stop to buy anything, they will disappear 🤦

Most of the time, they do not abscond with the goods, the load is heavy, they want to move as fast as they can to relieve themselves of the stress, and also to get the next client as soon as possible.

Since this is Nigeria, I won't be surprised that the woman and barrow pusher were working together, and she got some foodstuff for free

Going by this your warped reasoning,it means that it's karma that also caught up with the woman because she must have also stolen someone's items in the past?
Put in another way,if someone steals the boy that stole this woman's goods,money or valuable item in the future,what then happens to that person?Later down the road,someone too will steal from that person? Then on and on it goes!
You can see this your line of reasoning doesn't make sense.

I'm quite sure it's not one of the regular barrow pushers that did that. They're usually in some kind of association.

There is need for these guys to have an association. Then each barrow pusher should have a unique identify (tally) hung around there neck which must be the same with the person whose luggage they are carrying. This will help to quickly trace lost goods.

Example.
Barrow Pusher A = Luggage Owner A

But come to think of it. N24,000 worth of foodstuff is not exactly beyond an adult's capacity to personally carry these days.

And then why can't these markets operate like their more organized counterparts and have these devices available for personal use.
