The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected the three-year power transition plan proposed by Niger Republic’s military junta.

Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs, peace and security, spoke on Sunday in an interview with the BBC.

ECOWAS rejected the three-year timeframe after talks on Sunday.

"ECOWAS is not accepting any prolonged transition again in the region. They just have to get ready to hand over in the shortest possible time," Abdel-Fatau Musah, the bloc's commissioner for political affairs, peace and security, told the BBC.

He said the "military aspect is very much on".

He added: "The earlier they give power back to civilians and concentrate on their primary responsibility that is defending the territorial integrity of Niger, the better for them."

The junta is feeling the heat and tactically looking for some soft landing. Niger is a small country, non military actions can do the magic. More sanctions should be imposed
