Op, actually ujuru as it's called by my people back then in Aguata, Anambra State, is quite different from the real ogbono. The flesh of the real ogbono is not edible cos it's very bitter. If you don't know the difference, you might end up buying one for the other. They all come out at different times

Do you know the name of this fruit?

In Igbo it is called ugiri and the seed is what is used to make ogbono soup you enjoy.

You can eat the back just like apple the the seed is dried and blended for ogbono soup.

Is God not wonderful?
The original ogbono does not come from this.

In Benue this Ogbono is a lower grade one.

The fruit that produces original ogbono - The outer flesh is not edible

The fruit is called oyi in Easn language (Edo) (spelt according to pronunciation)

As a matter of fact, we have it in our compound at Badagry. It's a big tree, sometimes it gets rotten and fall off the tree itself. One thing about it is they don't pluck it, you allow it fall down itself. And we hardly eat ogbolo in our house, so we just allow people come pick or when it's so much, we just break it and sell or sometimes throw others away.

ogbono fruit is not edible but ujuru as idoma calls it is edible
Ogbono tree can grow up to 100 - 120 feet in height but ujuru the one with edible shell can grow up to 50 feet
Ogbono can produce fruit after 15 to 20yeaers of germination but ujuru can start producing fruits after just five years of germination.
Ogbono trees are seriously facing extinction but ujuru tree can be found in every compound in otukpa

I like ogbono die. But I don't like the fact that a cup of ogbono is three times costlier than a cup of egusi. So most times I just change my mind and go for egusi or even okro sef, but whenever money plenty for pocket I just go for ogbono.
But the quantity one need to cook egusi, you don't need that for ogbono. Just a little quantity, and your ogbono don full pot.
