Well, it is possible that the coupists were pushed by the Brits to assassinate Nigeria's leaders in order to start the descent to war.

Wouldn't put anything past them to be honest.

But I've no idea why Ironsi ignored all appeals to prosecute them. The entire country was sending delegations to Ironsi at the time, for 9 months straight, begging him to bring the killers to justice to avoid reprisals and war.

He ignored all entreaties. I mean, the north saw it as a slap in the face and a gross insult.

For them, the Sardauna was God's representative on Earth, even more important than Prime Minister Balewa, and he was murdered, and NO ONE was held to account? I mean, come on. It was obvious where that would lead.
Please Ironsi was in power for 6months from Jan 17th till July 29th 1966 so how in God's name did he stay 9months. Bros you can lie sha.

I remember the day Gen Murtala Ramat Muhammed was assassinated like it was just yesterday.

It was in February 1976. I was a kid in a private primary school in Lagos.

The afternoon it happened, we were in class, and the teacher came in and made the announcement, that there had been a coup, and that Gen Murtala Muhammed had been shot in his car on his way to work in Dodan barracks. (He never used a motorcade or convoy, saying he had nothing to fear from Nigerians as he was not a thief).

We all started crying in the class! Everyone!

Then the teacher - an Igbo woman said to us ''Please stop crying. I know you are all sad. Or do you want me to also start crying?''

Those were her exact words.

Then she broke down and wept uncontrollably. Right there in class before all of us.

General Murtala Ramat Muhammed of Blessed Memory.

THE WHOLE NIGERIA loved Gen Murtala Ramat Muhammed.

His assassination hit the soul of every Nigerian.

That is what you call a leader. Completely incorruptible. Completely honest. Completely determined to change the life of every Nigerian for the better.

Corruption ENDED in Nigeria during the reign of Gen. Murtala Ramat Muhammed.

Not 'reduced'.

ENDED. Full stop.

Later on we learnt there was CIA involvement in the assassination. The links were never pursued because Obasanjo, their man, replaced Murtala Muhammed, and that was that.

Adieu, Nigeria's greatest leader.
Rubbish...........d guy that destroyed Nigerian civil service! started the continuing northernization agenda!!!! Obasanjo is and remains the best Nigerian leader by far! One thing I love about OBJ is that within his power and knowledge ,he will always try to balance his decisions and actions............and he is a stickler for acquiring knowledge........he would have done even better as a civilian if the north did not use the national assembly to abort and slow his plans!

Murtala was a war time criminal.......he allowed his subordinate and side kick Ibrahim Taiwo to organize the massacre nearly 5000 male civilians in Asaba..........less than 10 years later nemesis and cruel death visited the 2 of them ( murtala and Taiwo) in the Dimka coup! Let us not talk of the july 1966 counter coup ,when the useless murtala and even more useless Danjuma superintended what is arguably the most heinous crime ever committed by the (slave raiding fulani army disguising as a national army),dragged out hundreds of innocent Igbo army officers and slaughtered them in their barracks...............conveniently leaving the coupists of the January 1966 alive!

Well said sir.Especially in Ikeja and Apapa barracks alongside Buhari, Major Martin Adamu, Lt Paul Dickson. They all formed a gang of cold blooded killers

Lies repeatedly told makes people to believe the propaganda is true. Read "OIL POLITICS AND VIOLENCE" BY MAX SIOLLUN and other of his books that gave a balanced account of the atrocities of the North back then. Also read late Major Adewale Ademoyega's "WHY WE STRUCK: STORY OF THE FIRST NIGERIAN MILITARY COUP."

You are quite right about Murtala Muhammad being a cold hearted killer however , so also, were the Jan 15th coup plotters, who crept about in the middle of the night, killing other regional leaders indiscriminately whilst sparing theirs.

The bolded part above is not entirely true and sadly, you know it but I reckoned, you just can't help yourself. It's only a cultural trait.

Albeit, the Jan 15th coup was a treasonous against the nation but somehow most of them found themselves incarcerated in the old eastern region including Lt. Col Banjo who's crime was allegedly, planning a coup against new Head of state, General Aguiyi Ironsi!

Even, Awo was in prison (at the time) in the old eastern region under Ojukwu who managed to neutralised the few northern soldiers in the East.

If you knew how corrupt that man was, you wouldn't be saying this. This evil man Murtala Muhammed ordered the murder or massacre of Asaba indigenous inhabitants just because they are Igbos during the civil war. That's why Almighty God ensured that he was also brutally murdered in a hail of bullets in his own pool of blood!

Evil man, may you rot in hell!
