Op, you've spoken well... But, I hate to disagree with you...

Employability can not and should never be restricted to those points of yours. Honestly, it doesn't even make sense.

Determining a person's employability or suitability for any role solely by appearances or how well-written his resume simply points to erroneously and unprofessionally judging books by their covers.

If you remove these superficial and unprofessional prejudices and test them starting with written exams, followed by verbal interviews of those who pass, you would be shocked that the highest-scoring won't even be the ones with the finest packaging.

You didnt state the main reason which is lack of skill and experience. We most times rely on paper qual rather than developing oursleves to add value. For me that is the first criteria. No matter how professional your cv is, how cute the character is, how confident you maybe during interview or how great you could cram and pour all you read, if i put you in the field of play you cant deliver, your name will disappear from the list on its own. No waste of time. So in summary, develop yourselffffff.

Read to understand unemployable.

shortgun:
You called 590 people who applied for the job in your organisation on phone one after the other to find out all these?

You must be a superhuman or you are telling us a super story
Re: Five (5) Reasons Why Some People Are Unemployable - Odewale Adesoye (Green Man) by LZAA: 12:24pm On Aug 29, 2023
Your points at number 2 and 3 are weak
It's perfectly normal to be cautious at number 2 to avoid scammers and number 3 happens to job seekers at some point mainly because they apply for too many vacancies
The rest is spot on

You're the one who is unprofessional not the candidates. Once you give a call, you immediately introduce yourself and why you're calling before they utter a word. "Good morning. My name is Femi. I'm calling regarding an application you made to...... for the position of..... Is this....?"

Not "Hello, how are you?" it's within their right to be cautious to someone whom they can't ascertain is on the line. You could be a scammer trying to steal some of their details. In fact, in this day an age, with AI, some scammers require just a sample of your voice and they will be able to authorise and meander through major security checks. So because of your unprofessional ways and 80k job. They should always lose guard.

The point about them not remembering they applied to your work means you're not aware of the realities of hiring. So you expect them to make only one application once per month for a company that might not even acknowledge your application or make them in hundreds per day. It's clear you don't know it's both a game of numbers for the recruiter and the applicant.

In a normal professional setting, you're meant to email these candidates, informing them of suitable dates or time for a phone call. Not just call whenever and be say they didn't pick up.

It's clear that because you were retained after NYSC, you have no idea how recruiting and job applications work. Arrogance and ignorance.
You have a really good point but you sounding like you are one of the candidates grin grin

People are nervous and protective in these times.
It's not easy to display fantastic character to the public.
In general, people are squeezing their faces on the road.
So don't expect wonders in job applications or interviews.

You needed not to be calling. What happens to their e-mail addresses? Reach them through e-mail, the serious ones will get back to you and start communicating from there. You would have saved yourself from the unnecessary embarrassment.

You mean 980 applicants were disqualified because of the reasons above

You are right but even written exams cannot be a perfect screening method because most of the exams are GMAT based. If a candidate did poorly, it's not a proof that the fellow is unemployable.

In my opinion, if you attended a good University and graduated without sorting your way, you are employable. You just need training.

How about folks who got job because of their relatives working in certain places even with a 3rd class degree...the same place would bounce someone with 2:1 for not having a good resume

All you have written here is based on global best practices.

The OP hasn't been exposed to such.

That's why he turned a clear and unambiguous process into long distance mind games

U are right because this things happen alot, don't blame the applicant that much. Some are frustrated and because of the situation at hand, they are outdated ie they stay without working for years.
This 2,3,4,or 5 years of working experience requirements is what I don't Wellcome at all. I think the employee uses it to punish an applicant, why not give the person that job and guide or give him orientation or teach him on what to do about a specific time before resuming properly.
Wit this! everywhere will be good, these people will have the experience anyway.
I don dey apply so tey since I grads from school but no job for the sake of working experience. Or Mek I put bet9ja cashier experience because I worked there for 2yrs grin grin grin grin

You are right but I think the use of the word 'unemployable' is overstretched.

The right context for unemployable should be;
When a person, after exposure to training still cannot perform the functions assigned.

Some folks have passed exams randomly. Though, I don't fault the companies organising exams, they need to have a screening method.

Think9ja:
Stories for the gods..

If you don't add a bit of lie in your resume, nobody will call you. Recruiters are looking for only two things in a resume; Experience and Achievements.
If you lack in any of these, you need extra grace. It's not by using figma designs on your resume...

About the phone call, I honestly wouldn't like a recruiter to contact me through a phone call, anybody can just call anybody. Reason why banks will always tell you not to attend to phone calls about your account. That's why there's an email. Even the email is not a personal email, it has to be company email

Also, are you the only recruiter offering that same kind of service in Nigeria? I've lost count on the number of jobs and the company names I applied last week. If a recruiter calls me and start asking me random questions I will fall because I don't know the particular one I am being asked about because I didn't use one resume for all

Finally, the biggest scam in Nigeria is the issue of character. Character is good, but it's not a big factor. That was how they said a degree is in character and learning, yet, some lecturers don't even know the faces of their students. Infact, some first class students are cultists. Are they first class in character too?

Na only God go help us for this limited job market
this insight is so wonderful brother.
Especially the first paragraph about experience and achievements, that's what I used during a recent interview and got a job.
All those achievements were lies cheesy and experience non existent grin
