In the Nigeria context, no king, Oba or Emir has more influence than Obasanjo. He is first a retired 4 star General, then he was a military head of State of state and finally he was a civilian president. Do you know what Obasanjo security detail contains? Apart from DSS and Mopol he has a full platoon of soldiers guarding him. The only person more powerful than Obasanjo is the current head of state. When Obasanjo seized Lagos BRT buses during Governor Fashola reign, it was Bola Tinubu that took Fashola to Otta to prostrate for Obasanjo before he released the buses.

Most traditional rulers have lost their respect to money.

They lost their respect long ago, after they sold their own people for mirrors, umbrella and guns. They signed away their rights to the colonialists for immediate material gains in the name of a protectorate agreement. After the colonialists left, they transfered those rights and powers to their political disciples instead of handing them back to the Kings.

As it is kings rule at the discretion of political leaders - Governors, local government chairmen, etc.

Following constitutional ways to dethrone an emir or any traditional ruler in the north or anywhere in Nigeria by a sitting governor or president is as easy as abc. But he don’t dare molest him in the public the way Obasanjo did to the Yoruba emir. Not to even a past president or governor doing that. The day he did that to northern emir, those guys in red agbada go molesterm I swear. Oluwo that cited that example knows better than you. If you don’t, at the time Ganduje was in the process of dethroning Sanusi, he still had bend and greet him whenever they meet one on one.
Even though Ganduje followed the constitution to do that, since then, he never enjoyed ruling Kano, and it’s the major reason he lost Kano in the last election. Kano people are teaching him lessons

This is the first time I will hear OBJ disrespecting any king. I do believe the bad part of him just manifested at that time. I am of the believe that the OBJ I know will send apology letter to them soon. There are countless pictures on the net where same OBJ prostrate for kings and emirs just to greet them. I won't condemn him because this is the first time his bad part overwhelmed him on this kind issue.

These are kings! They are not supposed to be counselled or ridiculed in the open. Regardless of the truth in Obj's statement, he shouldnt have ordered them up from their seat in the public. That's shameful and degrading.

My friend, Obasanjo said the right thing and acted the right way. All Traditional Rulers in Nigeria are under the President and the Governors. So they should all stand to great them in any event. Who are they? I think these Traditional Rulers are assuming far more than they are.

There is big difference between using constituted authority to remove monarchs and humiliating them in public. What Obasanjo did was wrong, Yoruba only respect the thrones that these individual Obas occupied and not their personality.

I blame those Obas for allowing him to insult them like that.

Here is what Obasanjo said;

What did he say that is off? If the governor was there, won't they all stand up and greet him? Remember the only person with a higher order of protocol than a former president is the current president.

GCFRs are a different breed.

Moreover, standing signals acknowledgement not subordination.
In the West, in recent past, whenever a woman walked into a room, every man stood up.
It was a cardinal part of the Gentleman Code.
But it didn't mean the women had more rights or were superior.
