A true Yoruba person won't do what Obasanjo did to those traditional rulers in Oyo.. What Oluwo said is true, let Obj go to North and ask their Emirs to stand up to greet him and see what will happen.

It's still part of the docility among Yorubas I keep talking about.. timid and easily controlled.

They should stand up and greet you.. as God wey you be. Nonsense.
We’re not timid. We just don’t take them seriously lol. Maybe Yoruba kings haven’t done enough to get us to fight for them. We’re not their slaves

You just want to talk so that you can get useless like.

The governor has power to dethroned king but no Governor in the northern Nigeria can command Emir to stand up and greet him.

So is a two different things

This Oluwo is just making noise don't mind him o.

If a GCFR ask you to stand up, pls stand up o

Even if King George of England comes here, and a GCFR ordered him to stand up, he must obey.

A GCFR is the power-pinnacle of the Nigerian state. And a GCFR is a GCFR, doesn't matter if he's the seating President. Tor.

Are you HI on some cheap substance... King George?.

What's toxic here?

So Olowu doesn't deserve a right to his opinion again?

Being toxic is an individual trait, not something tied to ethnicity, tribe or race. The statement "yoruba's are toxic" is false and came out of a bigoted mindset.

However, oluwo's comment is undeserving. Everybody has a right to informed opinion. Nobody has a right to opinion born out of ignorance. Nobody has a right to ignorance. Oluwo's comment is mischievous and borne out of ignorance. Maybe he should be reminded about what happened btw ganduje and emir Sanusi in Kano-northern nigeria,or between Late Gov. Rimi and late Emir Ado bayero also in same Kano state of northern nigeria in 1981.

In late Rimi's words :
Abubakar Rimi then declared emirs to be

“mere public servants working under the directives of their local government chairmen.”

All these happened, and heaven did not fall!

There is hypocrisy on both sides.

1. Traditional rulers are ceremonial, I say this all the time and I will say it again, they lost their kingdoms to the British. They were defeated by the British and are employees of the state, therefore governors, presidents are higher than any King or oba or Emir in Nigeria and that it why if a governor doesn’t like you he will remove you. There are some states where traditional rulers require/d written permission from the local government chairman to travel out of their “kingdom”……what kind of king is that? Sultan of sokoto was removed by Abacha, Emir of Kano was deposed and exiled by Ganduje, ALaafin of Oyo was demoted by Awolowo and an hitherto inconsequential Ooni was made the senior Oba in Yoruba land. Do these kind of things happen to Kings or employees? I think we can all see from these three examples who is indeed subservient to whom. It’s only in Nigeria that you lose your kingdom, you are defeated, you are conquered and you are still parading yourself as King…..King of where? The only reason Emirs, Obas, Obi’s etc still exist in Nigeria is that the British needed people with local knowledge to help them administer Nigeria via indirect rule. And so they kept them as hired help.

2. Having said that (and this is where the hypocrisy on Obasanjo’s side comes). Obasanjo is also no longer a head of state, the same reason he refuse to bow to them is also why they can equally feel they can’t bow to him. If anything the kings are ceremonial custodians of culture, Obasanjo is just a regular citizen..

Most of these Kings gave up their Kingdoms without a fight. I don’t see the why they should be honoured. Glory and honor comes in dying protecting your kingdom, at least put up a fight, so your descendants and lineage can have glory…but instead you sign agreement to relinquish your kingdom without a single shot. Special mention to the Benin and Ijebu kings ( and a few others). who at least fought the British and went down fighting.

According to the Nigerian constitution, a president or even a governor Has more powers than a king. The power of Kings ends at the gate of his Palace or at best his domain. In Nigeria King's are just ceremonial and holds no direct power or responsibility.

In a public space particularly outside the domain of the King, a former president is regarded higher in order of protocol.

Yeah, but when it’s time for your criminal politicians like OBASANJO to campaign for election votes, they rush to ‘pay respect’ to these traditional leaders, and ‘seek their blessings’, and beg them to influence their people to vote for them.

WHAT WE NEED IS GREATER CONSTITUTIONAL POWER AND AUTHORITY FOR TRADITIONAL LEADERS, AND IT MUST HAPPEN.

He might have used "village-people-power" (VPP) on the hapless and hypnotized monarchs.

Oluwo opinion can't be trusted in this context because he may be hiding under religion to to give bias opposition to Obasanjo. Obasanjo was not insulting but correcting reality on ground based on constitution of Nigeria. Who doesn't know that governor and president are superior to ceremonial obas? Obasanjo has paid his due many times prostrating publicly for Kings, attitude of some of the kings may really be responsible for pushing Obasanjo on that public outburst
play the video very well and listen to what he said. He rubbished and addressed them like erran boys. He is not the president, he was an expresident and a chief in his own community. He is a balogun of his community and, he is telling them to stand up in a disrespectful way. Thats wrong.

Obj is one of the yoruba elders we respect most. As custom demands, he's prostrated for Ooni Ogunwusi, someone old enough to be his grandson in the past. He's done same to alake times without number.

Which emir is oluwo referring to here?Obasanjo is the only respected leader in Nigeria amongst Northern traditional rulers. Emirs had stood up to shake hands with him without being compelled, severally.

Take back that respect, he’s lost it. He is an attention seeking egoist. He is supposed to be grateful for all the many chances God has given him and somewhat right his wrongs, but no, he is particularly losing the little respect he has left in his very old age.

What we celebrate in Obasanjo in Yoruba land is his age and the grace God gave him. He has no shame and he is self-centered. He is attention seeking.

Nonsense talk. President obasanjo did nothing wrong.
It is even worse in the north.
In the north, a governor will not only stand an emir but he will sack him and divide his throne.
Ask the former emir of kano .
If you know nothing about Yoruba culture then keep your comments, the throne is not about individuals but the institution, the Oni of Ife is probably younger than all Yoruba Kings, but He is still the custodian of the title The Ooni of Ile-Ife, the spiritual head of the Yoruba people. Obasanjo was very wrong in desicrating the institution no matter how old or whatever height he might have attained in life.

That's more reason why I love the Oba of Benin......Even as a Deltan,I still respect the Oba of Benin pass all our kings down here because of how he's been respected by his own people, whether rich or poor..

The Problem with Benin is their Daughter's

They make you wonder if they are from the same Great Benin kingdom we read of in History

I have a friend who is an Edo Nurse but her people insult her as if she no dey see road

Understanding is very important here

The protocol is whenever the President or The Governor walks into an event, you stand to welcome him, because he is the constituited authority and symbol power of the people

Also whenever you visit a palace you bow to the king and his royal stool as a respect to the kingdom

.

U said a President or Governor.....
So if a Governor who ruled in 1980....walks in, we are to stand up.....Not true.

Every omoluabi know that Obj did was WRONG.

You blame Obas for agreeing with constitutional provisions?
Here is what Obasanjo said;

What did he say that is off? If the governor was there, won't they all stand up and greet him? Remember the only person with a higher order of protocol than a former president is the current president.

Yes, Obasanjo was just being brash. Maybe he was annoyed that he was not recognised when he came up to speak. Maybe non of the obas came yo greet him.

Please don't say what you don't know, Yoruba obas, especially first class Kings don't stand up from their seats to greet governors or president except where the Kings involves just arrive and meet them on the seat. We all know even local government chairmen are above them but we respect the thrones and subsequently the Kings. The same obj that have postrated for Kings countless time when he was in power is now telling them to stand up and gree him. The man is just being bitter or probably affected by old age.

If that was the case, those Obas would've stood up even before being reminded by arrogant OBJ.
