My friend i think you confuse culture with method of governance. As for Ohafia people, i didnt know about them till you posted so (unlike many Nairalanders) I did some quick research before responding. It seems they went down fighting and I commend them for that. In Yoruba culture, two things, among other are respected.

1. Elders ( Ojo Ori)
2. Position ( Ipo)

The kings disregarded both by not standing for Makinde/Obasanjo. That is the standard, you stand to honour the Gov. and Obasanjo, by the virtue of their ranking.. Then, in return, they honour you back.

Afterall, it was not in their palace, it was a public gathering.

Makinde is of higher position than them..infact, he pays their salaries.

Obasanjo is a former Military Head of State, a Former President (GCFR) and an Elder.

Respect they say, is reciprocal.
