The Black Book (2023).

Again, if only Nollywood could hack this good script writing thingy, they might be in business!

According to reports, this has the highest budget for a Nollywood flick ever, at an impressive $1M!, and i just had to see it, if the budget was put to good use, and the Simple answer is Yes and No, Yes been that this probably has the highest production value of any flick made here in a while and i can clearly see why it is doing so well internationally, and No, been that every other thing is below average and we shouldn't be having these problems any more.

Pros
As i mentioned earlier, the production is so high quality that i was actually amazed, the cinematography and the color grading was so good, and could rub shoulders from those from other well established movie industries. The direction was fantastic, i follow Editi Effiòng on X, and i know when he was looking for an "established director for this" and the search was futile, that eventually had to step into the director's chair and he did a mighty fine job. The casting was A1, majorly veterans of the game, and that cast will move me any day.

Cons.
It was like these people just finished production, and when editing they just threw anything at it and called it the plot and just ran with it because what the hell was that?. The plot was running into different directions and asking so many questions that they simply had no answers for. I have tracked Editi Effiòng's trajectory and he has been doing well but he should allow another person into that writers room!. The plot paths became so ambiguous that you would simply just abandon trying to follow any of them. The character development was basically next to zero. If they had just followed one of the plot and saw it through well, they might have had a fantastic flick that would have left an indelible mark in this clime. One other thing i noticed, that is not peculiar to this flick alone but to other flicks here in recent times that have had a big streaming outfits backing them, The acting tends to be "unnatural", especially from the leads, who are actually fantastic actors with exceptional range that fit the stories we tell here. They tend to want to mimick the lingua and mannerisms of "Hollywood" for a flick in similar genre, and that makes their delivery seem out of place and plagiarized, they probably think it will help them sell it more internationally. it is worse in this because they actually copied the John Wick Template a bit. That's why i continue to praise Chidi Mokeme's "Scar" gangster delivery in Shanty Town (2023), He clearly understood the assignment.

All in all, they lost me with the plot but I stuck it out because of the unusually fine production on display, albeit the experience was enhanced because i saw it in FHD.

Good for a first watch but a second watch might be a beautiful torment.

it is only because amazon and neflix are backing the industry

movies everywhere are driven by profit. the old nollywood movies were built for a particular class of audience
even now - they are probably not making money.

The huge money backing should mean better movie making all round but sadly it's not. They actually have a huge platform and reach know, people from remote part of the globe are now seeing our movies. We should do better.

You sound like the kind of parent that expects new school buses and buildings once a school increases school fees.

The huge money backing that you are talking about-
* does it bring back the expert editors and screen writers that have japa-ed from Nigeria to USA or Canada?
*does it translate to improving acting schools, screenwriting schools and the theatre industry that are poorly funded by the government?
*does it translate to the supporting industries (Camera and filmmaking equipment manufacturers, Theatre schools, Schools of Art, NEPA aka PHCN, etc) becomign better?

Nigerian movies cannot surpass the Nigerian economy. Until the government invests in the film industry or at least support the investors in such industry, the movies will always be limited in quality.

You might think you are antagonising my point but you are actually buttressing it further.

The huge money is actually showing in every other part of the production bar the most important part of movie, which is actually the script, and it is probably the cheapest part compared to acquiring props, location and costumes to make the script happen. The problem is that the film makers are greedy and overlooking it and don't wanna pay for a good script, and these "good scripts" aren't in Canada or the USA!, They are here!. I know this much is true, about my people in the script writing industry here and i know what they face in the hands of movie makers. Good scripts are left to rot here because of this.

So case in point is that, I know the government are inept and can actually do better, but it is not their lack of investment that is making the movies here poor. I have followed Iranian and Pakistani cinema for a while, the governments in these two countries are ultra religious and totally detest the stories their movies tell so they don't support the industry as much, but movies from these 2 countries have been in the running for foreign language Oscar awards constantly in recent times.

Bubu's tenure set us back decades but before him, i remember GEJ did support the industry even with incentives and funding, their are actually many film schools here that graduate excellent film makers yearly. This might sound to good to be true, i don't have the recent data, but as at 2021, Nollywood was the 2nd movie industry in the World in terms of brand value and yet it doesn't translate well to good movies in terms of quality script and this is not because of lack of Government investment as you postulated and if the investors lacked incentives as you claim, Netflix wouldn't have spent close to $25m in the industry in 2 years and Amazon Prime laying a 5 year plan for Movies and series from here!

Has anyone finished Asteriod City? ( The beginning was so slow for me). Is it any good?

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar makes me wants to see other movies by Wes Anderson.

It's a pretty decent Wes Anderson movie. The pace doesn't quicken sha. So that slow beginning is basically how the rest of the movie is.

Weekend Movie

- Gran Turismo (2023)

The only reason this caught my attention was because of Orlando Bloom. Reception looks promising and I haven't seen a racing movie in a while so let's go.

Back in the day, I would have pointed out how you contradicted yourself and missed the point.

But.......in summary, I would just tell you to sooner expect to squeeze water from a stone than for the Nigerian film industry aka nollywood to improve.
