I will attempt to answer your question with how I understand this. The world is wicked. Western leaders are not really interested with Peace in Israel and Palestine because like you've rightly and logically noted, if they were, the logical thing would be to try and broker peace by calling to sides to a round table and promote a ceasefire rather than supporting one group over the other. They are simply more interested in keeping Israel as a Military partner in the middle east in case any problem arises in the middle east in the future and so they have an always ready military partner to for example launch troops from. So as long as Israel is their ally, they can exact more influence over that region.Afterall it's not their children that are being bombed.Otherwise they would have adopted the same strategy they adopted in Africa in middle east where they let the ECOWAS decide the fate of Niger and also let middle eastern countries decide the fate of both Israel and Palestine. As it stands the creation of the nation of Israel post world war 2 in that region was a western creation that did not exist before and only existed because it was brokered by the west.

I understand your point... but I will try to summarize a very long and complex situation; you see, this thing is not as easy as you think; First of all, a two state solution was proposed looooooong ago in the early days of Yitzak Rabin and Yassar Arafat, but Palestine defiantly refused, alongside other surrounding Arab nations, that have refused to recognize Israel as a sovereign nation.

The idea was to have Israel completely out of the region-by destruction... Why? Nobody exactly knows, because it's really beyond anti-semitic perspectives alone... and thats the main reason you have terrorist rings like Hamas, running around scot free within the region (by the way have you asked who funds those groups consistently? to constantly keep firing rockets to a country with very advanced air defensive systems is not a 100$ affair)... **Bear in mind, that despite Israel's aerial bombardment of Gaza, Hamas are still firing rockets into Israel as I type this post**

Assuming a deal was even brokered to consolidate "lasting Peace in the region" like you stated, will that automatically stop the activity of networks like Hamas and Hezbollah in the region?

Boss, asides the heavy anti-semitic views within the region there are alot of other broad factors that make "peace" within that region almost or if not impossible.

Take note, this war is not against Palestine or Lebanon et al, but against terrorism. And Israel being a sovereign nation, as a duty, should protect itself from Terrorism.
