They're not "cruel". These policies have actually worked in Asian countries. Africa is a different matter because of low productivity.
worked in which Asian countries? Sri Lanka that is a shadow of itself thanks to IMF? Singapore and south Korea both have a reason why they banned IMF help. Even china hates the IMF more than it hates the US. It's only poor desperate countries that find themselves duped by IMF who then introduce unclear policies to keep them licking the boots of the western corporate giants. No reasonable country goes to IMF for funds that's why chinese loans seem more attractive

These IMF folks should try harder. This is very pedestrian advice that lacks rigour. They fall my hand.

Govt has said it will widen the tax net first, make the economy buoyant once again before contemplating tax increases. In fact it seeks tonreduce multiplicity of current taxes as incentive to tax paying entities.

How do you justify tax increases now when the low hanging fruits are staring us in the face?

IMF is being thrifty with the truth...!

Without addressing Corruption, Wastage, and Insecurity, no policy will work.

Higher tax for whathuh In a non-working, non-accountable system.

Should their advice not be geared towards productivity then?
That's what they're geared towards. In a way. We have a revenue crisis, which hampers government's ability to provide electricity and roads - which are critical for productivity. Increasing taxation should also help curb importation (fewer Champaign bottles will be demanded if you tax the rich), tame inflation, and firm up the naira.
Re: IMF Proposes Higher Taxes As Solution To Nigeria’s Fiscal Challenge by CodeTemplar: 2:35pm On Oct 14, 2023
Taxation isnt a bad idea but how and where it is done mostly in our case.

Not many productive activities exists and so taxing people for just existing is likely to fail.
You tax me but can't protect me. Agberos and thugs can tax me further without any fear. Bandits can levy the food I eat and not be challenged. Police can do theirs do. Taxing the common man isn't the way out here. Leadership privilege and power has been used to corner all the commonwealth available from resources and they were mismanaged so taxes won't be any different.

Who exactly do you intend to tax?!! What is their earning power?!! What is their current living standard?!!

Can you extract water from a stone?!

On what solid foundation do you want to extract taxes and raise revenue?!!

You don't put the cart before the horse.

Higher tax is impossible where those in government are agents of poverty, corruption, and visionlessness.

I lived through Babangida's SAP and I saw what it did to me, my family and other families. I saw how it wiped out the middle class. So I'm against IMF loans and their conditionalities too (No, I don't have agree they failed everywhere, but that's for another day.). But the issue here is not loans - it's a specific IMF recommendation - increase taxes.

Camdan. Scroll up. I already made this point in response to another poster. Yes, you can't tax the poor. We must raise productivity and empower our people first if we're to get anywhere to close to optimal taxation.

It's obvious the major sinister motive of all these western agencies is to impoverish, dehumaize and render Africans redundant, hopeless and helpless.

America's World Bank advised our govt to remove subsidy and like a magic, the economy would bounce back, knowing fully well that lack of funds was never due to subsidy payment, but just to make life harder for us.

Now the twin sister of World Bank is telling the FG again to increase taxation as if the consequence of subsidy removal was not enough, now encouraging the govt again to implement another hardship advice.

No international agency has the genuine progress of Africa at heart. All is smokescreen with stupid analysis to bamboozle us.

Bro, I'm always calm... Me and you no get problem. tongue

My problem is with IMF... They never tell these leaders the whole truth.

Nigeria needs to massively increase internal production, and cut down importation, as a matter of urgency... Infact, it has to become a compulsory national project.

But, this can't happen if you don't clear off Insecurity and Corruption.

When UK, Canada, and others massively tax income earners, no one really complains because the tax to income ratio is reasonable for those living simple and prudent lives... In addition, the revenue doesn't get stolen.

Meanwhile, IMF will not talk about the monumental corruption in all facets of government.
IMF is blind on the expenditure profile of government which spends 70% on recurrent and a miserly 30% on capital (half of which is stolen anyway)

IMF does not see bogus salaries and allowances of the politicians, its only subsidy and taxes of the poor they are obsessed with.

The inability to provide electricity is down to corruption and never lack of funds to. I have researched what power projects across the world go for and realize we are being raped and ripped by these heartless people in power.

God bless you... This is precisely what I was talking about up there.

They leave the core issues to beat about bushes.

If you don't tackle Insecurity, Corruption, Government wastages, there will be no way to save and redeem this nation, no matter how much you tax.

It is a little bit like teaching or relating a recipe by unveiling the ingredients one after the other has been purchased so the one being taught goes to the grocery store many times and is likely exhausted. A very subtly way of wearing us down so they can take over our affairs fully.

The corruption is ridiculous and fantastic.

Even Lagos with all the massive taxation, more than half of their revenues are being shared by top people in government including the one currently in Aso Rock.

If you put 80% of what Lagos generates monthly in revenue into that State, it will be on the same level with Johannesburg (if not ahead) in terms of development.

I'm genuinely shocked and ashamed that no part of Lagos and Abuja can even boast of 24 hours uninterrupted power supply for up to a month by now.

You guys do not understand
As far as the West is concerned our most important export is human resources, not oil. Our past Government and our individual families have spent the last 50 years laying foundation for education. We are highly educated, and are ripe for plucking.

So in the 1700s it was manual labour. In 2000s its intellectual labour. IMF policies are designed to encourage the best and the most educated to leave, move to an OECD country and make economic contribution there. This is the modern rendition of slave trading. Everyday you hear how they do not want immigrants yet they all create one program after another to allow you immigrate as long as you can work with their desired skills. Germany even took in a hoard of Islamic refugees as labourers at the risk of future terrorism.

Unfortunately, visionless leaders like the current ones are the hands that execute these agenda. The end goal is to get the best willing to immigrate for little.

What IMF is saying is a good step we are not positioned or ready for. That makes it a bad advise.
Production/productivity precedes taxation. Tax is a cut if something donated towards appointed authority for use for the good of all. The level of that something is so low, people are largely surviving and taxing someone for survival is different from taxing them for prospering or remaining prosperous.

It's obvious that Nigeria as a country is nothing other than a colony of IMF. If not why our government would allowed these blood-suckers to dictate to us how we should run our economy. Let them just advice the government to auction the country and the entire population so that everybody can rest. Nonsense

We import from the IMF main men and they cannot shoot themselves in the leg. It is up to us to use our initiative to boost production locally. Local production owned by Nigerians and not just FDI that will still lead to capital flight in few years time.
