If you grew up on the island in the 80s you would know this festival. Eyo festival. It used to be held that year on the island and you'll see Lagosians trooping out to celebrate it.

I remember seeing them as a child around our area as they'll walk all the way from obas palace on the island down to the streets of Ikoyi claded in white with their opambata and that hat they wear over covered faces that makes them look very scary, chanting the Eyo song and making one sound like eesua! We as kids then used to run screaming to our houses as they approach.

What happened to them cos it's been a while they held this Eyo festival. Even before I relocated from the island in the early 2000, it stopped.

Any one remember or saw this as a child?

That was when the original inhabitants of lagos control the affairs of their environment.

Now they've been overrun by owomida thugs, touts and criminal politicians from kwara, osun et al.

Smh sad

Yeah. It was a Lagos thing. They even have the big statue of Eyo masquerade in the center of Eko Idumota market.

There was this man, my dad's colleague that used to participate in it. In fact it was because of him that the Eyos troop into our area. His name is Mr Azeez, a practicing Muslim. he has the complete attire and used to join them anytime it was held. Uncle Azeez keh.. na Dem dey bring am enter Ikoyi those days.

His type of Islam must be different from the extreme form practiced by the people in ilorin and most northern states.
I find it difficult to believe that people can fight beautiful tradition and discard it completely.
Most people don't have tradition anymore aside from the religion handed down to them by barbaric Arabs.
I pray lagos state does not get to the type practiced by those in ilorin and northern Nigeria.

Good vivid memory you've got on them head of yours!
Eyo is still very much alive; albeit strictly regulated by the authority!!! Why?
During the military administration of General Abacha; the Cult-like rivalry, public display of animosity and eventual blaady butchery that often characterize the Eyo Festivities among the various sect of the masqueraders is such that put Nigeria in a very bad light in the international community.(Remember it's a tourist attraction event covered by international media houses)
This led to its banned, which was later reviewed to Restrictions.

Looking carefully at the costumes, EYO masquerades have "White man" written all over them.

* The hat is certainly of European origin.
* The emaculate (bleached) white fabric was imported. Local cotton cannot be sparkling white.

It's just celebrating the white man's culture.

Hunger. Do you think it's easy to wear that gown and be dancing in this Tinubu's era. They will just collapse and die. The hunger is too much.
