IKOYI MAGISTRATE’S COURT SENTENCES ENVIRONMENTAL OFFENDERS

An Ikoyi magistrate’s court, today, imposed ₦30,000 fines on 25 persons, with an option of community service, for acts of indiscriminate waste disposal, at different locations in the state.

The community service took place today at General Hospital Odan, Lagos Island and Maryland bus stop.

The environmental offenders were caught dumping their waste in unauthorised locations, by the enforcement team of LAWMA, in collaboration with LAGESC (KAI).

It would be recalled that earlier this week, 26 persons were sentenced to community service or option of a fine, by same magistrate’s court, for engaging in indiscriminate waste disposal.

Let us desist from illegal dumping of waste or face the wrath of law if caught. The zero tolerance on indiscriminate dumping, is not limited to markets alone, but cuts across every individual and entity.

INDISCRIMINATE DUMPING: 26 PERSONS FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE

A magistrate’s court, Environmental Special Offences Court of Lagos State District, sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, has imposed ₦30,000 fine per person or option of community service, on 26 persons, for engaging in reckless waste disposal across various locations in the state.

The environmental offenders were arrested by the enforcement team of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), at different locations in the state, disposing of their refuse in unauthorised places, between the hours of 9.30pm and 7.00am.

Commenting on the judgement, Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said that the ongoing joint enforcement action by the Authority had been intensified, in line with the zero tolerance policy of the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

"The era of recklessness and disdain for the environment is over. Anyone caught under whatever guise will be made to face the wrath of the law. The exercise is a continuous one", he said.

He urged residents to support efforts made to sanitise the environment, by shunning acts of reckless waste disposal, having waste receptacles at home, and patronising only accredited PSP operators, warning that there would be no hiding place for defaulters.

It would be recalled that 29 people were earlier sentenced to fines and community service by a magistrate’s court in Oshodi, for engaging in indiscriminate waste disposal, at different locations in the metropolis.

When they subject our criminal and corrupt politicians to same punishment, we will take them a little serious.

Nigeria law is just for the poor and downtrodden.

Good one... God bless my Lagos, God bless Nigeria, God bless Tinubu for setting the standard straight in Lagos.

This act should be emulated by all states in Nigeria, especially the Eastern states the dirty hub of the nation...

I hope everyone can see this now?

If you're the type that loves to eat gala and coke and throw the nylon & bottle on the road, you will soon sweep like these people cos you guys are the reason why the environment is dirty... Some of you would even go as far as dumping refuse inside canals.

All those trash you throw out don't disappear, they end up in the drainage and canals, causing flooding all over Lagos.

Let the authority know that many adults send their kids to go and dump refuse in d gutter.
Such kids shld not be spared but should be made to lead the task force team to their parents who shld be arrested instead.

I think this is a very good idea, but att least they should have provided them with nose mask + hand gloves?
I also remember during the time of Fashola, you'd see waste baskets like every 10minutes walk. I know Lagosians/Nigerians are stubborn, but a preventive is better than a punitive.

It's a PUNISHMENT, NOT A SERVICE.

They have already been provided with bibs, if the offenders want gloves and nose masks, they will have to get that for themselves.
