Strike: NLC, TUC Summon ‘extraordinary’ NEC Meeting by ManirBK: 4:58pm On Nov 07, 2023
The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have summoned what the unions described as an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting.

The National Vice-President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, made this known in an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday afternoon.

The aim of the meeting, according to him, is to review the modalities of the planned strike following the brutalisation of the National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero.

He also said the meeting will give room for the review the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Federal Government and the Organised Labour on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol.

This, he said has caused “untold hardship” to Nigerians.

He stated, We will be holding an extraordinary NEC meeting any moment from now. The modalities include the injustice meted upon comrade Ajaero, the planned strike and the MOU signed with the Federal Government. More details will be revealed after the meeting.

The PUNCH reports that the organised labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, on Friday, issued a five-day ultimatum over the earlier arrest of the National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, by the police in Owerri, Imo State, on Wednesday.

The labour centres demanded the redeployment of the commissioner of police in the state and the arrest and prosecution of the aide of the government who was alleged to have perpetrated the attack.

The unions also threatened to embark on a nationwide industrial action if their demands were not met in five days from Friday.

Ajaero was arrested by the police ahead of the state-wide protest in Imo on Wednesday. This was disclosed by the NLC’s Head of Information, Benson Upah.

Although, the police denied arresting Ajaero, stating that he was merely taken into protective custody to prevent a mob attack.

The Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, had accused the labour leader of meddling in the political affairs of the state.

The attack on the labour leader has been condemned by many prominent Nigerians and civil society organisations, including the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, and human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN).

The labour union in Nigeria is a rag tag army of selfish individuals. They have no principle and cannot make any impact in the current dispensation.

If they want any strike, they should go to where they got beaten and strike there. They should not try any nonsense.

The federal government recently announced the award of 35k palliative to all Federal government workers pending the agreement on the minimum wage. This announcement has suddenly led to hike in the price of commodities.

For instance, a painter of beans in my area is now 3000. A liter of fuel is now between 600 and 700. A kg of gas is now between 1000 and 1200. A bag of rice is gradually getting to 60k per bag. etc.

The most unfortunate thing is that some federal workers are yet to see the 35k palliative. Some state government just managed to add a little token to their workers' salaries.

With the way Nigeria is going currently, I wonder how some families manage to cope in this hard times.

Government is not helping matters. The same government asking you to endure is allocating billions to herself and cronies.

It's a pity my brother, there should be a distinction between Labour Unions and Labour Party.

Labour leaders ain't selected based on the political party they belong to, I wonder why the Labour leaders infused Labour Unions into the Labour Party. THAT IS NOT FAIR

Majority of civil servants who are members of the Unions may not belong to Labour Party or may even be apolitical.

As an individual and a Nigerian, the NLC president can support any politician or Party BUT he shouldn't drag the entirety of his members into it.

Tinubu that was begging FBI not to release documents of his past narcotic crime and identity theft in the USA was bragging that they took him to court and he won them.
It is not that easy to remove a Nigerian president whose victory is questionable in office. He has already appointed his loyalists both in the military, judiciary and police. If he has not been sworn in as president he would not have won.

When he was begging FBI I was having a pity on him.

Joe Ajaero has hijacked and turned NLC to a union of rascals and thugs. It is no longer about the welfare of Nigerian workers.

This is now all about vendetta against the present administration for defeating his candidate.

One tout was beaten in his state in Imo. Now every Nigerian is now to be punished. This is unacceptable.
