Because only a capital MUMU will see a story in a major newspaper with the date it was reported clearly stated, and think it is from 10 years ago!
Comments are based on what is posted. What you quoted is not in the report.... date of sentence. If that were in the report then anyone with half a brain can figure out the case dragged on for ten years

That's exactly why I started my critique with "Does everything have to be spelled out for you?".
Even without a date you ought be able to infer that a solid newspaper like Punch cannot suddenly start taking up their limited space with ten-year-old news!!

And na just 5 years dem give am , for 64 million, isiorite
Quenncee:
I can help him do the time if he will give me 70% of that money. I go run the 5years without stress. Even dey do BTC inside jail.
They gave him 2½ years (see below). 2½ years NOT 5 years!!!
Deception and dishonesty everywhere!
And they'll immediately appeal it anyway, and he may not spend up to a week in jail!

Not everything has to be spelled out ... but date of sentencing has to be. How can a solid paper publish such an article without sentencing date?... leaving readers to read between the lines? That's unprofessional. Take a look at these ... they don't waste time in letting readers know when the sentence was handed down.... maybe they have to spell it out because their readers are mumus ... can't read between the lines.

Hence the mumu comment! The date is implied in the wording "has (just) sentenced him". They're reporting something that just happened. It would be nice if they said it happened today, but they don't have to because it is implied!
Meanwhile here are ones you didn't post:

You need to edit what you posted... personal information.

@ discussion ... no doubt ... the tense used ... " announces" .... "has sentenced".

Cashier from hell. Despite the trust of your employee. From just ordinary casual labour and someone trusted you with that exalted position but what did you do?
Evil will continue to beget evil. Go and do the time.

You mumu people, everything has to be spelled out for you.
The judgement has just been delivered!
The case has been going on since 2013 but the judgement just came down
I forgive you in advance.
