Allen Onyema, Air Peace chief executive officer (CEO), has faulted the push for a national carrier, describing the plan as a “moribund idea”.

Onyema spoke on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television.

The CEO said the country does not need a national airline owing to the difficulties of running such a business.

“Does Nigeria actually need a national carrier? It’s an emphatic no,” he said.

"The national carrier thing connotes government ownership. The government has no business doing the business of commercial airline operations.

“The national carrier thing is a moribund idea that has been jettisoned several decades ago by countries.”

According to Onyema, several airlines that bear country names are just “flag carriers” and are not owned by nations as many may have assumed.

"In the olden days, they used to be [owned by governments] but they are all divested. They are all flag carriers,” he said.

“Why is my country going backwards? In 2023, talking about national carrier?”

Onyema said he believes the few African countries with national carriers are those “that cannot afford business entrepreneurs with the right funding.

In May this year, the ministry of aviation, under Hadi Sirika, former minister, unveiled Nigeria Air — three days before the end of the administration.

However, the move steered several reactions and was enmeshed in controversy.

Two months after President Bola Tinubu took over power, the federal government announced that the project was suspended.

Hmm

Of course, you wouldn't expect such move not to be enmeshed in controversy. However, it's a bit logically true! Government should create an enabling environment and not necessarily a 'National carrier' because of past records.

Coming from the owner of a private airline, sounds a bit selfish to me. We all know that public owned organisations are more affordable for the masses than private which are more profit oriented. What we should be focusing on is accountability and maintenance, not pumping subsidies into private companies

FG that loves packaging some biz as Nigeria owned only to run it at a loss instead of conceding some things to hands of private sector. How is the govt being run sef?
Isn't it at a loss all the time?
Look at NEPA, NITEL, all the refineries, all stadiums in all states that can't generate up to N2m monthly. Some states suppose get only one football field but some greedy govs will build different stadia there to gulp money. States with no viable economic generation on footballing or sporting activities o!
See the earnings of the president, state govs, senators, reps etc. As at 2016, Shehu Sanni said senators earn N16m monthly. For what?
Those same senators recently got N160m SUVs. Are they that special? Is Nigeria so rich to afford those luxuries?
How often do they get cars, gifts, house allowance etc?
Isn't it time Nigerians beam search light to really know how much politicians gulp monthly and yearly? How much dey enter treasury accounts sef?
How do govs, senators, reps, ministers spend money?
How do we check if projects done are fine well, they are worth the cost and they are fine on time?

Sadly FG has no idea on how to run the economy. Although Mr Allen isn't totally clean , he's making way more progress in the aviation sector than the Federal government.

The useless administration of the Buhari govt used the the sham Nigerian air to enrich its cronies in the last minute and not one single person has been prosecuted for that.

The FG wont take this advise for two reasons.

1. Onyema is from the wrong part of the country.

2. Having a National carrier, even though an exercise in futility also gives enough room for embezzling and siphoning funds.
