On Tuesday morning, Amad posted two images of himself carrying a rifle, on his X profile, with the caption: "We stand with Hamas. Hamas stands with us, together we are Palestin and Palestin will be free. With our souls, with our blood, we will conquer Al AQSA (sic)."

By the afternoon Amad appeared to have removed the post.

Defending his post, Amad added: "Seeing a silent picture incites a reaction depending on what lenses you are wearing. One is able to make a determination of violence (sic)."

"… I hope you can determine if the rifle is a toy or not since it's okay for the selected public to see violence in the picture of a protest(ing) person. People should not be told how to protest in South Africa."

When asked about ownership of the weapon and whether his post might incite violence, Amad instead declared his support for Palestine and Hamas.

He called on people who stand for the liberation of Palestine to protect themselves against those inciting violence against them.

"We do not condone violence. We will never condone violence. We understand that we have an obligation to continue the fight against apartheid. When political parties in South Africa openly declared war against Hamas, that was never interpreted as violence," he said.

In April this year, Amad resigned from the mayoral position hours before a planned motion of no confidence could be tabled against him.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South Africans to guard against the Israel-Palestine conflict turning South Africans against each other.

Ramaphosa made the remarks in his weekly newsletter “From the Desk of the President” on Monday.

The president said the conflict between Israel and Palestine has long been a “polarising conflict” that has deepened divisions in societies and communities way beyond the Middle East.

Ramaphosa said the conflict in Gaza called for solidarity, tolerance and dialogue.

“No matter how strong our views on this matter, we must guard against this conflict turning us against each other as South Africans.

“Our Constitution protects everyone’s right to freedom of opinion and expression, to freedom of association and to demonstrate … There is no place in South Africa for violence or threats of violence against those who hold contrary views. Nor is there any place for any form of prejudice, racism or chauvinism.”

Ramaphosa also dismissed a report suggesting that government is ‘encouraging pogroms’ (organised massacre) against the South African Jewish community.

Jews want to tell SouthAfricans how to protest, not minding that SouthAfricans already told them they are no different from the apartheid government that previously ruled SouthAfrica.

Jews now thinking of how they will cancel this African who is making a living within Africa.

You must be a nutter if you think Israel or the Jews give a toss about what south Africa think of them. That would be Israel scraping the barrel. There are better people to worry about, not wafflers on the net.

By the way do you have a clue what an apartheid state really means or do you just love chucking the word around!

Israel actually cares. As we speak SA parliament is voting on whether the Israeli embassy in Pretoria should be closed and ambassador asked to leave. Thats why Israel called him home before the vote to avoid the embarrassment - they know SA parliament will vote to cut ties with Israel.

South Africa backing Hamas terrorists doesn't make a blind bit of difference to Israel, and Israel couldn't care less because South Africa is just following the trend of supporting Hamas for a few likes and fame on the net.

Here's your Mayor doing a U-turn, even deleted his post. Is he such a wimp just like Hamas?

Confused shithole brained African.
If u ask him now,he will say it is because of apartheid.
Meanwhile, the land in question is the only home 20 million Jews can call theirs while the bloody Arabs have almost the whole of the middle east and even up to Africa yet they want from the desert to the sea, meaning the Jews should just vanish.

Sometimes I wonder what manner of mentality we have as Africans. We are too emotional for our own good. You see Nigerians on NL cussing themselves out over Russia-Ukrainae war and Now Hamas-Israel? Like these two countries give a fuq about us or what? Can you imagine what this SA dude is doing, like Hamas who uses their own daughters as shields would hesitate to blow his black ass up?

I don't get it, why do we love those who oppress us so much? All these countries hate black people and call us names yet we vehemently decide to associate ourselves with them and support their rights. My conclusion is that so much of our history has been erased due to our inability to write them down coupled with the destruction of that culture by whites and recolonization by Western culture that we are psychically confused about who we really are. That manifested in the urge to BELONG to any and all ideology because we have lost so much of what used to be ours.

N.B: Don't get me started on religion. That's the most controlling force on this planet and the fact that people don't realize this baffle dafuq outta me. How do you kill others (created by the same God) because they don't have same faith as you? How do you defend a God who supposedly create the whole universe and more, by killing those who according to you, defiled his name? What kind of God asks you to go out and kill others who he created in his own image? The list goes on and on and I'm tired that this singular movement called religion is so ingrained in us that no one is even willing to sit down and think for once that, " am I even doing the right thing"?

Not surprising. South Africa has always believed that the situation with Israel and Palestine is no different from the apartheid regime they themselves experienced since 1912.
