Op please your attention is needed. Can I buy a pregnant pig? I was told to bring 150k |
| Re: Diary Of A Pig Farmer by wizzie001(op): 2:32pm On Nov 23, 2023 |
Fatbam005:Its not advisable to buy a pig you dont know its history, the buyer could be selling due to the antecedent of that pig, it could be due to still birth often, low number of production of such pig or could have gotten pregnant as a result of in-breeding. If you arent convinced, then you will be taking a big risk. Either way, goodluck. |

1. At how many months does your pigs get to table size and what is the weight at this age? 2. What age does your pig get to 200kg? Is it worth it to keep meat pig to such an age? wizzie001: |

In your experience, how would you compare the growth performance of landrace, large white and duroc especially against camborough on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best? wizzie001: |
| Re: Diary Of A Pig Farmer by wizzie001(op): 8:13pm On Dec 27, 2023 |
safarifarms:Well, the feeds formula goes a long way in determining how fast your pigs gets to table size. I give my pigs combination of ultima starter, pkc & milk waste if i want a rapid growth. There is no point leaving my pigs to get to 200kg for slaughter, the highest i've gone was 180kg, it was way too big that the farm hand was now scared of entering the pen, i had to let it off. |
| Re: Diary Of A Pig Farmer by wizzie001(op): 8:17pm On Dec 27, 2023 |
safarifarms:I store the milk in a drum, and i ensure they drink all within a week, reason being that, the more it stays, it intoxicates the weaners that they start rolling and tumbling on the floor. |

wizzie001:I'm laughing so hard about the intoxication. You got them high with alcohol. The other problem with alcohol is that it kills appetite. So it can possibly reduce feed consumption. |

safarifarms:wizzie001, can you please respond to this question too? Thanks for responding to others |
| Re: Diary Of A Pig Farmer by wizzie001(op): 7:56am On Dec 28, 2023 |
safarifarms:The breeds you mentioned up here are unique in their own way, the difference is just that large white & duroc can reach 380kg body weight if well managed, whereas land race could barely achieve 250kg, but they are good mothers and tend to give birth to more litters. Camborough is a mixed breed, they have the capacity of achieving massive body weight too and they tend to reproduce well enough. |

wizzie001:thanks a lot for this. Where in 2025 and your diary since 2021 is still helpful. I've always been interested in pig farming and I finally started February 2025. I bought 2 female pure large whites and a male. Sadly I lost the male a month after. He stopped eating and I thought he needed deworming so I administered ivermectin injections. I returned from work and met him dead. Yes, the 2 females are doing well and very close to mating, probably by July. I've paid for a pure male large white in Ado but transporting it to Akure is another walaha. Now to my question, what's the cost of this milk? |

KillaBeans:The process of getting the milk isn't so easy from beginning, they may push you to state health agency, then back and forth. My people are trying to get through it. |
