nyben231101: You're right, Jaja had a disagreement with Manilla Pepple canoe house in Bonny. Oku Jumbo and his allied attacked Anna Pepple canoe house(Jaja's group). He left with other indigenes of Bonny to the hinter land in 1870 were he found an unoccupied vast land which he called "Opubo" now Opobo. |

erico2k2:Nairaland igbo boys are generally misguided so don't take what he said seriously. While Ijaws are culturally and otherwise closer to Igbos because of our longstanding relationship, it is foolish for Igbos boys to claim superiority over Ijaw people whether in strength or ethnicity. Ijaws sold Igbos as slaves so it is foolish for anybody to say Igbos will lock door and flog Ijaws 2 Likes |

Abufo:The irresponsible info in that video above is clearly false and a pure case of historical revisionism of Bonny history by that narrator in the video and this will set the folks of that area up in arms against Ibo expansionist ideologies. Yes, during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, there was Ibo slave presence in Bonny due to interior Ibo slaves being brought by the Aros and their Aro confederacy allies such as the Abams, Ohafia, Item, Abriba, etc. Some of the Aros also had trade outposts in Bonny and even King Perekule (or People) had an Aro wife brought to him by the Aros. The European and American historians clearly stated from eyewitness accounts in the late 1700s that Bonny was Ijaw and they acted as middlemen in the slave trade. Many Ibo slaves and those of other ethnic groups (even Hausas) passed through Bonny on their way to the Americas on European and American slave ships. NOW, Dappa is a name that has been in use for decades on Bonny Island even before the 30 months (exactly 2 years 6 months) Nigerian Civil War of July 1967 to January 1970. The father of modern Ijaw nationalism, Chief Harold Dappa-Biriye (an ex-Kings College Lagos graduate) had always used that name Dappa even before 1967 so what is ALL this lie by a young inexperienced YouTuber that Bonny people changed their names to Ijaw names after the Civil War in 1970? Clearly, some of the young Ibos online are not doing the larger Ibo population any good by spreading falsehoods. Chief Harold Dappa-Biriye was the one who alongside Ken Saro-Wiwa and other Rivers leaders told General Yakubu Gowon in 1966 to create 12 new states and that was granted on May 27, 1967 after further nationwide consultations in 1967 with the indigenes of the new states. The southern minorities in the Old Eastern Region such as the Ogonis, Efiks, I Ibibios, Annangs, and Ijaws led by Chief Harold Dappa-Biriye rejected secession by Colonel Ojukwu 3 days later on May 30, 1967, and alligned themselves with the rest of Nigeria to fight the Ibo aggression and forcible annexation of non-Ibo areas into the illegally created country which was NOT even recognized by the United Nations because the larger percentage of minority ethnicities like the Ijaws, Ogonis, Ibibios, Annangs, Ekoi, Efiks, etc, REJECTED the Ibo-led secession. This is why Nigerian Federal troops of the galant Third Marine Commando which was commanded by the then Col. Benjamin Adekunle, Alani Akinrinade, Jasper Adaka-Boro, etc, had many recruited Ijaw fighters in it and they were welcomed with open arms and wild jubilations during the liberation of Bonny, Port Harcourt, Calabar, etc, by the Nigerian Federal troops. There are pictures in the war-time history books and online showing jubilation scenes by citizens in Port Harcourt during the liberation by Federal forces in 1968. Even the great Ikwerre-born author and Nigerian army officer, Elechi Amadi was rescued and freed from prison in Port Harcourt by the Federal troops of the Third Marine Commando. |
