lol.

You lucky. And if you no dey speak portugese, e dey enter gear.

I love Brazil.

Back in the day, I leave America for Brazil, long story short, my brother no follow me go.

My guy, I started from square half no be even one.

The embassy people wey I follow catch flight enter Brazil, stayed in Rio, upper class area, I go them house for 3 days, with the hope say i go get hotel, they had to travel to Spain.

Na im I go fool*shyly go lodge for hotel, with only $2320, wey everybody scrape for me. My brother dun go back Naija, dey plot him asia trip. Long story short, after another 3days for hotel of $225 per night, my pocket weight drop. Na so I begin think about my future.

I sabi speak portugese, and I fit get along with people, so from talking to people there, on to say, I dey find where to rent, them direct me about 2 hours away, even hotel dey cheap. I run into some Nigerians for Rio, one tourist, and two people wey dey stay there, some igbos. (dem avoid me because dem no understand this kind guy wey ready follow them anywhere wey dem dey go, and I use style tall pass them, so them dey call me giant), me not knowing say, dem dey find way to shake me off - my boldness no pure to them , I no blame dem sha.

Na so i enter hood for Brazil(deliberately unnamed) based on direction from those hotel workers for Rio. O boy, I no cun know say na one chance I enter. I no been know say, gang war dey brew for area. I dey this hood hotel for 3 weeks, dey find where I fit rent for a month, but e no to pure. After 3 weeks, I cun dey see say, I no fit get place then go find work, where i go start. Mind you, during this 3 weeks, i dey reason am say, no be for me to enter Nigeria, then go restart - at least I still know Nigeria better, but shame no gree me - make I call am pride.

Anyways, one thing I do for my first 3 weeks for hood, na to dey listen and speak less, e help me hide my Nigerian side, but I no know say e make the two gangs wey get beef, dey look me like either mercenary or undercover. I no dey sleep, when I go back hotel for night, na so I go dey learn the accent of portugese based on slangs from one area wey I dey tell this mamaput lady, say na where I travel from.

One day, I dey the lady shop, na him, like 4 guys show up spray like 3 people down for the shop across the lady shop. The lady sun already wan close her own shop, matter of fact, that week na her last week. I cun convince the lady say make she give me 2 months, to help her hold down the shop, while she go the other city start her new shop; she also been wan do am because her 16 year old daughter dey misbehave and she dey suspect say the girl dun turn their house to gang hangout.

The week I take over the shop, by this week, I dun comot the hotel, dey sleep for back of the lady shop; The first week, 2 guys show like normal, begin blast for the shop, na him dem hit me for back and my hand - thank God e no hit me for worst place. Anyway, dem bandage me up, even the ekelebe no know me proper - I still dey form person wey come from village side. I speak portugese similar to that side.

Small small, I cun dey learn about everything. I no change the name of the small mamaput shop, but I begin make suya type of meat, next thing you know, the place cun dey busy even more, and more yawa cun dey dey around. The place na neutral side wey both sides fit show. No be only our shop there. Dem also know the lady but no cun dey see her, but with the new busy way, I dey sell suya dey put am for aluminum foil with sauce on the side. So, like joke, many of them cun dey hangout there. E get one 17 abi na 16 year old boy, wey dem dey call Anode, na him dey give me more news on the low down of the area and who be who. Before I forget, dem rob me twice in two months, use their weapon hit me well well, stab me for hand - nearly comot my finger wey I dey try hold one of the guy from beating me not knowing say na him knife I go hold, na so he draw the knife, e tear my hand - e take over 4 months to heal.

One day, that small boy Anode and him friend, come there dey chill for morning, dey talk to the bar side near the small shop wey i dey run, na so like another 2 small boys show for bike, clear anode, two of him friends, and one girl.

Long story short, I cun let like 4 people cun dey help me for the shop, small small, some of the guys wey dey the gangs cun dey see me like person wey dem go give respect, I dun collect from both sides and even small new gang. Ekelebe dun arrest me multiple times, dun even shoot at me for the shop because dem never see me before. I thank God. And I still dey work, with bandage, with everything, as long as i fit move, dem (the gangs, the ekelebes, the regular area people) never see anybody like that - dem no know say na condition make crayfish bend - na necessity for me. I dey baff, everything for the shop. E ruff for my first year and half. Me wey dey think say, I dun comot Nigeria, say I dun escape that kind thing. I dey tell you, many times for night when I dey shop dey sleep, na so dem dey do shootout for the street, over 100 shots or more. The shop and other shops, bullet holes everywhere.

Long story short, with time, sometimes dem go dey talk about yoruba and their wish to go there, and all these, na so I use cun dey find out say many of them na igbos, after them do gene test (wey dem dey trace their root to Africa). No be say everyday na war o, there were fun days. But the war days na hellellee. When i see say dem dun dey like Africa like that, I begin dey play all that timaya, p square, those early davido, wizkid, etc so my shop (by now, I dun buy the shop from the landlord wey that lady rent from. I dun get like 4 boys there. I dey good on both sides of the hood. The day wey dem wan do peace treaty, na my shop both number 1s come with other community leaders, by this time I dun dey sell isiewu sauce with rice, suya, kpuff kpuff, chin chin, peppersoup, rice and stew, jellof rice (like coconut rice type), and some of their food. I get 5 people wey dey work there, I dun buy the bar next door.

Na so o, in 19months, I no sleep reach 4 hours a day. If no be war, na future planning. Na so i use get into oil and gas and underwater welding, from one of my big dawgs wey come around one day. I do unpaid training like 2 hours away from the shop area. Then I cun get money, go Nigeria, cun enter yankee cun learn more, make money go back, open more shop for Rio, then cun buy delivery trucks, cun buy fashion store, from there cun dey try. E no easy, movie never finish. But, now I fit enter Brazil and be treated like citizens. When some of them cun know say I be Nigerian, dem trip. Dem no believe am. I speak like them. The area people see when I nearly kpai. I get scar for head wey bullet scrape me, my hand, back, chest, leg, Na God o. But I will forever be grateful to Brazil. Nothing but love. I put basketball court, build play ground, help many people, just like i dey do for Nigeria.

Things for take longer than normal, but na God. With time, I cun dey meet more Nigerians, mostly igbos, but I dun meet real Nigerian yoruba before too. Even those nigerians wey I see in my first week, dem be paddy now. I take my brother enter Brazil for visit, like 2016 abi na 17.

E plenty, but make I stop now. Memories.

Just humble when you dey there, Brazilians can get really rough. And small pikin fit dey take cocaine, so dem no dey too normal.

While in Brazil, I once stayed in a Favela, that is what they call their ghetto there.

Favela is actually the name of a tree that grows on the hill where they built houses, and over time they started called houses built on a hill in similar fashion a Favela.

One day I decided to film my journey while I walked through the favela I was staying. It was a mistake and I will never do it again.

In the favelas, there are always drug dealers, and if they think you are an undercover cop, they can easily take action and get rid of you. So walk around with a camera was a dumb move on my part.

Someone approached me about it, he was not happy, and he explained to me and everything was cool after. I stopped recording right away.

Which neighborhood in which country did you go?
I heard there are Yoruba Brazilians.

Those who were taken as slaves by the Portuguese slavers but retained speaking the Yoruba language.

... or the good old badass AJ city, Ijora or Makoko not to talk of the oga patapata of ghettos in India.

They have never seen real ghetto or slum. This is just a typical largely poor neighborhood nothing special in terms of ghetto level.
