US Customs Seizes Undeclared $68k Cash From Nigeria-bound Family by Karemarealty288(m): 8:04am On Dec 10, 2023

The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, on Thursday, seized $68,000 from a Nigeria-bound family who lied about the value of cash in their possession.

The confiscation was made at the Washington Dulles International Airport when the officers were conducting inspections on outbound passengers departing on a flight to Cairo, Egypt.

Though there is no limit to how much currency or other monetary instruments travelers can bring into or out of the US, travellers are, however, required by federal law to report all currency of $10,000 or more to a CBP officer.

They are also required to complete a US Treasury Department Report of International Transportation of Currency or Monetary Instruments (FINCEN 105).

But the father, whose identity was not disclosed, claimed that the family had $10,000 in their possession, after which he signed the FINCEN 105 form declaring that amount.

However, upon further inspection of their carry-ons, the officers discovered that the total currency in their possession amounted to $68,216.

The officers remitted $216 to the family as a humanitarian release and seized the remaining $68,000.

The family was then released to continue their journey.

The CBP, in a statement detailing the incident, did not state whether the said family members were Nigerians or not.

Marc Calixte, Washington D.C. area port director, said the seizure was totally “avoidable” if the family had declared the true amount they had.

Calixte noted that unreported bulk currency may sometimes be the proceeds of illegal financial activities.

He said seizing a traveller’s currency is a “very serious consequence”, adding that travellers who fail to truthfully report all of their currency risk facing potential criminal prosecution.

And answer more questions about how such amount of money got in their possession especially if they're on a visit visa and not expected to work. They knew what they were doing by hiding that money

" Gave them $216 for humanitarian reasons... seized the rest. " undecided

The money was obviously fraudulently procured.

Just lost it in a flash. Good for them grin

PS : only a very big fool would think the money was legit.

680 pieces of 100 dollar bills (highest denomination) is extremely difficult to hide. Not too smart criminals.

Heroic achievement according to the bulaba template!

All they have to do now is stay back in Nigeria, forfeit some of that money to the US government, run for governor, then run for president grin

That money was illegally gotten I can guarantee you. Whenever I have some building projects ongoing, I simply go to my bank and wire the money and get charged just $45. I have wired up to 20k on many occasions. Sometimes I just use those apps like LemFi or TapTap to do 2k until it gets to like $9999 within a month because anything more than that, the money will be seized and will only be released when you show proof of how you got it. This has happened to me numerous times. Just show them your bank statements and paystub and they will release the funds.

When I was relocating and I had more than $10k with me, I declared it and when they asked me why I had up to that on me, I told them I was relocating my family to a new land and that we need to live and survive before we settle on properly. That was it. No further question from Nigeria to the country I was going.
