Yes, there’s a lot of historic and genetic evidence to suggest that a large portion of the Palestinian Arabs were originally Jews. “Palestinian” as a term was actually historically used to refer to the Jews that lived in the region, long before the Palestinian Arabs ever came into existence.

The Jewish diaspora was formed through multiple waves of migration that spanned many centuries, not one big exodus. And many Jews never left the homeland at all. Under the Romans, there were mass conversions to Christianity among the Jews and the Jewish locals intermarried with settlers from surrounding Roman provinces. Most of the Jews that remained in Palestine cultivated olive trees and made olive oil for the Romans. Palestine today is well known for its olive production. 🤔

Under the Arabs, there were mass conversions to Islam among the Christians, and the Arabs that settled in the region intermarried with the Palestinian Muslims (though this did not happen with the Palestinian Christians as they remained highly endogamous). The people of Palestine were gradually Arabized and they switched from speaking Jewish Palestinian Aramaic (the common language), Greek (among the upper classes), and Hebrew (for Jewish cultural reasons) to Palestinian Arabic.

There remained some Jews who maintained their religion despite all this and there were even some Jews from the diaspora migrating back to their ancestral homeland centuries before the establishment of the State of Israel. That’s why there has always been some Jewish presence in the region despite all the massacres, expulsions, and conversions they endured. Some of the most famous pre-modern Jewish migrations back to Palestine occurred during the Spanish Inquisition when many Sephardi Jews fled Spain for Palestine.

Most Palestinian Arabs today claim descent from Arabs but some have folklore about Jewish or Samaritan ancestors in the distant past (others have relatively recent stories as there were still forced conversions to Islam happening in the 1800s). The Samaritans are basically the Jews who never went into exile after the Assyrian conquest but they ceased to identify as Jewish as they split from the Jews over theological differences. The Samaritans were persecuted by the Romans and slaughtered in huge numbers but were never sent into exile like the Jews were. The population closest related to ancient Israelites today are the Samaritans because they continuously inhabited the area in contrast to the migratory Jews, but there are only about 874 Samaritan people left today (a disturbingly low number compared to their historical population which stood at 1.5 million). Jews are genetically diverse by contrast because of their migratory existence. Jews have varying degrees of admixture from the non-Jewish populations they lived among.

Is there any genetic evidence that Palestinians are descended from Jews?

Genetic studies have been conducted to investigate the ancestry of various populations, including Palestinians and Jews. These studies have shown that there is genetic diversity within both populations, as well as genetic similarities and shared ancestry. However, it's important to note that genetic evidence is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to understanding the complex historical and cultural connections between different groups of people. The interpretation of genetic data in the context of historical and cultural relationships is a complex and ongoing area of research. It's important to approach these topics with sensitivity and respect for all involved.

The second genetically closest related population to the ancient Israelites are the Palestinian Christians because they descend from Jewish converts to Christianity. Many of them even descend from the first Christians ever - the Jewish Christ

Der Spiegel explained that its editors are checking the information in the material and may republish it, but in a modified form.

⚡Spain said on Sunday that it would not join a US-led coalition to protect Red Sea shipping from attacks by Yemen‘s Huthi rebels.

The Iran-backed Huthis have carried out several strikes on Red Sea shipping in what they say is in support of Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

On Thursday, the Pentagon said 20 countries had joined the Washington-led coalition to protect the key shipping lane.

Spain’s government has been ambivalent and on Sunday a spokesman for the defence ministry told AFP that Spain “will not participate”.

While no reason was given, the Spanish press on Sunday said the decision not to participate was driven by domestic politics.

⚡Ukraine has described the appearance of summons checkpoints in Kiev as a "drill".

Ukrainian authorities have told residents that the checkpoints in Kiev are a "drill" and are only there to check documents. The checkpoints have appeared in various parts of the city and will remain in place for a few days. "The 'drills' include, among other things, the setting up of temporary roadblocks, the installation of restrictive signs, elements of technical barriers".

Locals, however, disagree - the military have blocked the roads and are stopping all passing cars to hand out summonses. Cordons have also been seen in other regions.

⚡About 19,000 soldiers have left the Polish Armed Forces this year, which is significantly more than in previous years, Rzeczpospolita reports.

Among them are about 9,000 professional soldiers, 62% of whom had pension rights. The remaining 10,000 people are already former servicemen of the territorial defense. The publication emphasizes that the former head of the Polish Ministry of Defense, Mariusz Blaszczak, hid this data for a long time.

Next year, the trend seems to intensify: according to the Polish Ministry of Defense, in December almost 5,000 military personnel submitted applications for dismissal. They will retire at the beginning of 2024.
