Russia will be more than happy to have those ukranian territories. Even if ukraine joins nato or not. Because a ukraine joining nato with its full teritory means russia will have to defend an over 2000km border (the silvaki gap or so) with nato. Which will raise defnse spending. Imagine belarus also a nato territory with ukraine. Thats suice. One thing is sure russia will keep the teritory whether ukraine is nato or not but they would have to win first or be in a position to negotiate favorable terms.
