According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, Chinese organizations filed 29,853 AI-related patent applications in 2022, up from 29,000 the previous year.

That's nearly 80% more than the US, which saw a 5.5% drop in applications.

Overall, China accounted for more than 40% of all global AI applications over the past year, data from the UN-affiliated agency showed.

Japan and South Korea round out the top 2022 list with a total of 16,700 applications.
