Left to me alone, if I were to make choices, I will only call graduates of that school for interviews, cos I am 100% certain I will get what I am looking for. I won't even bother calling-up some graduates of some schools, I don't care whether you the best there or not. I just don't want to waste my time searching for the best!

Wotoporiously cool speaking

Lol that's the problem we have in Nigeria, our choices are influenced by appearance, and who will employ the ones from other schools? So if someone were to be qualified for your job offer, you will denied them on the conclusion that they're not coming from the best schools on paper.

I'm wowed by your reasoning

If we were to go by just job employments, I don't think Nigeria will even have the world recognition we have now, thank God for talented individuals in various fields and business oriented people.

They have access to WhatsApp, telegram,Instagram, twitter. So what are you crying about again? Yes some sites are banned like porn sites etc. So what's the big deal?

If the no phone policy was because of porn, but access to the boldest Apps is allowed then the idea is defeated! Those boldest sites has a huge number of porn videos.

What nonsense and barbaric culture is this? undecided

In as much as I don't support the rubbish they're doing in those kind of universities, I still blame the people taking their children to such schools.
How can a sane parent keep their child in a school where communication is censored?
It completely beats my imagination.

I am not judging by appearance but experience. I know what I am talking about. We do have good students from other universities, but like I said, I just don't want to waste my time!

Do you know how many illiterates I have conversed with, who claimed they were graduates and had verifiable certificates? Have you seen a graduate talk and you just feel like beating him/she up, but professionalism wont make you do? Like I said, I just want to get to business. Hundreds of students of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, have reportedly been hospitalised due to suspected food poisoning in the institution’s butteries.

According to multiple sources who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES, the school’s medical centre has been overwhelmed due to the number of affected students.

But the university is keeping mum over the matter as calls and messages to relevant officials were ignored and not replied to for many hours.

Parent confirms development

Meanwhile, a parent, who is resident overseas, confirmed the development to PREMIUM TIMES in a telephone conversation on Saturday.

The source, who does not want to be quoted for fear of victimisation of the child, said the student has regained some balance and is now recuperating in the school.

The source said: “We have had difficulties reaching our child since we received the news. But earlier today (Saturday), we got through to our child who confirmed being affected by the food poisoning but is now recovering well and is fairly stable.

Other sources also confirmed the development but rued the school’s decision to keep the matter secret.

A former employee of the university, who also craved anonymity, said the institution should have spoken on the matter “to douse the tension but all this hide and seek game doesn’t help the university.”

Ban on use of phones by students

After the founder of the university and General Overseer of the Living Faith Church, David Oyedepo, had abruptly announced the ban on the use of phones by the students of the institutions many years ago, any student found with a telephone on the campus is sanctioned.

The students who are offered computer tablets for their academic use are barred from accessing many websites and social media platforms.

In the past, the students were allowed to make use of a public phone booth for communication with their contacts outside the campus. Many students who adopted the use of email for communication also fear that their emails could could be tracked.

The development has made communication with the students difficult, even as the ongoing crisis rattles the institution.

Evasive university officials
Attempts to get reactions from the institution on the possible cause of the food poisoning, and how the situation is being managed were unsuccessful, as calls were evaded while messages were not replied to by officials.

The university’s Head of Media and Public Affairs, Chichi Ononiwu, who did not pick up her telephone for hours, quickly cut off the call as soon as our reporter mentioned the incident to her when she eventually picked up the call on Sunday night.

Ms Ononiwu, who requested the identity of our reporter when she eventually picked up the call, cut off the line as soon as the matter was raised, and has refused to pick up subsequent calls.

Other journalists also confirmed Ms Ononiwu’s similar behaviour when they called her for comments on the matter.

Not first time
It is not the first time the university would be recording incident of food poisoning on the campus. A similar development was reported in 2010 when many students were said to have been hospitalised. Newspaper reports at the time confirmed the development.

This is a University and not a secondary school why restrict the children from phones and laptops and also from talking to their parents?

Well I wish them well all those that can send their kids and wards to a glorified jail all in the name of quality education.

I get your point but that's still not a good reason to trash anyone who you think is not from a good school, because just like you have experience with dullards from not so great schools, they're also dullards from the so called great schools.

Let me give you a little instance, there's this lady I know that's working for one of the reputable companies in Nigeria and graduated from one of the best schools too, one day i threw a very simple question to her which is in her line of work but the answer she gave me made me feel bad for the people that employed her. Imagine me knowing the answer to a question that is not even related to my field of studies but just wanted to test her knowledge because truth be told even a drop out can answer what I asked her.

You see what I'm trying to say, as much as there are people who we tag foolish, there are also very intelligent people irrespective if where they're coming from.

Now you can the advantage of have a cell phone at hand we pray nothing bad happens 🙏 but I don't see why they should stop them from using their phones , must everything be linked to Yahoo and hook up, we still have lots of them in public schools that don't do that, so don't make reference to something bad because you want to justify what's not good

Instead of calling parents, students and school authority, why not send an undercover reporter to the University to see things themselves? Very lazy reporting.

A school environment is a simpler example of the larger society and history has proven that one of the foremost things abusers do is to disconnect their victims from the outside world or closely monitor their communication with others.

Think of why the Supreme Leader of North Korea banned phones in the country.

The major reason they're denied phones is because of their authoritarian founder and totalitarian board. The students are disconnected from any support system outside the environment. For example, If a lecturer slaps a student, there would be no recording. Students will also be oblivious of what is going on in other schools and would not be emboldened to ask for better welfare.

If students were allowed to use phones, we'd know the true status of the mass poisoning that has been reported. However, since there are no phones, any report the school management issues to the public is final- exactly what North Korea would do.

Dictatorship should not be supported. That is why we're lending out our voices to the students who deserve better.

1. how does the schools no phone policy paint the school as an extreme institution with potential of producing extremists?

2. what type of extremists are you referring to?

Well with all that restrictions for a university it makes it a glorified prison, children should be allowed to express themselves, the best universities in the world like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Oxford and Cambridge don't do that and they produce better graduates than all this fake private universities running a prison system.

Even our public universities do produce better graduates compared to all this private schools that give admission to the highest bidder with just 180 jamb score

Only religious fools will keep sending their children to such an animal kingdom or glorified primary school, masquerading as a university, where students are not allowed use of phones.
Imagine the nonsense.
Even the case of food poisoning looks suspicious just like the building collapse of TB Joshua back in 2014.
Maybe the Queen of the Coast has demanded the sacrifice of the blood of 100 or less students, for renewal of powers or attainment of a super high rank in the demonic realm , for the Daddy GO.
Such things cannot be ordinary or random or mere mistakes.
Let's assume it's a mistake.Upon all the strictness and fastidiousness, observed in the school, proper food hygiene could be neglected,as to lead to poisoning of the students.
Thank God they survived.
May our children never fall victim to the blood sacrifice menu of all these Ashtaroth worshipping false prophets, all in the name of attending a mission school.
