Why Blame Tinubu For Inflation When Obi Vowed To End Subsidy “On Day One”? by Catapault: 9:53am On Feb 11
The hypocrisy of people blaming Tinubu for high prices caused by subsidy removal is truly mind boggling.

I clearly remember Peter Obi and even Atiku Abubakar vowing to remove subsidies “ON DAY ONE” of their presidency if they won!

So why is everybody now abusing Tinubu for the inflation?

It makes no sense.

Or am I missing something?

Good question.

Answer: Obi would have managed the situation better, with a human face and creativity.

Yes, you're missing something out

He said he'd remove the subsidy but in phases.

He said that Nigeria pays more on unaccounted petroleum...He said he'd cut out excess first, and then the money from the excess would be used to drive investments in critical sectors before removing it entirely .

I watched the interview

Forget Obi and come to nairaland and bring suggestions that will bail Tinubu out...there are government officials here...they might see your post and push your idea...

Nation is bleeding...You came out to call Obi

Don't we have consciences??

Yes, you're missing something big. One reason people are abusing Tinubu is that he campaigned vigorously against subsidy removal during Goodluck Jonathan's era. That's hypocrisy.

You don't just remove subsidy like a draft! you cushion the effect firstly then remove it slowly so it doesn't have a negative impact on the economy.

You're missing something as big as an elephant in the room, an illiterate promised to end fuel subsidy and an intelligent business man made the same promise. They are not the same.

The way an armed robber will take your money differs from how a bank accepts your money.

About this, here's a solution I believe in because it is mainly people-powered...

The Shortest Cut To Raising The Value Of The Naira: A Proposal To Nigerian Governments, NGOs and the Masses(Google Doc)

Let's stop depending on government officials because even if they get the idea, they will not know how to implement it. They will only use it to go and curry favor and it ends there.

Obi is not the president, tinubu is. Besides, Obi said he would remove subsidy in phases so that it will not impact negatively on nigerians.
Tinubu just removed subsidy without thinking.

He would have removed subsidy completely

The problem was that by August 2022, Nigeria was using 90% of its revenue to pay debts. Subsidy costa were.eating so much Buhari was borrowing to pay for it.

Understand the above and you will see.why they all said subsidy had to go.

Even now tinubu is spending trillions to maintain some subsidy.

The OP's question only makes sense if you believe that all that is driving inflation is subsidy.

In reality, inflation is also driven by the scale of the increase in government spending (FG budget went from N21 trillion in 2023, from N4.5 trillion in 2015, to N28 trillion budgeted for 2024). The increase in naira supply drives demand for dollars.

Monetary policy is also too loose, CBN interest rates should not be below the rate of inflation. But when you have a CBN governor appointed partly because he was part of Tinubu's inner circle, it erodes the independence of the central bank which is necessary to restore central bank credibility. Loose monetary policy loosens the appeal of holding naira as inflation erodes the value and you can't get interest rates that offsets
inflation.

Psychology also drives forex markets and electing an APC stalwart who has been making noise in the past about spending to drive growth (including suggesting printing naira) and who has a chequered personal history (to put it mildly) does a lot to cement the perception that Nigeria is not turning a new leaf and will sustain with its reputation as a corruption-riddled kakistocracy.

All 3 candidates would have reduced subsidy as there was no choice given the fiscal hole the country has dug itself into. Even Buhari, if he was elected to a 3rd term, would have done same. But by failing to tackle all the other issues I have referred to as we are witnessing today, it's made the situation a lot worse.

Is he not allowed to change his mind on policy direction of the country based on new realities or better knowledge/information?

Is he a robot?

Or a zombie?

What sort of country is this?

Even then his campaign against the subsidy removal in 2012 is one of the reasobs why we are here.

He was wrong and he knew better. Buhari too knew better.

That does not absolve the pdp and gej though. Good leaders take unpopular but good decisions

I read your proposal...its centered more on remote jobs.... Not everybody enjoys remote jobs..

Do you think remote jobs has the capacity to increase FX with a wide margin?

Also ,our population are not only youths although the highest. What do other people who are not youths do?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I've access to a startup/ techblog that can publish it.

Subsidy has little hand in the current inflation . Blame it on the high exchange rate. Tinubu did not shop for the best hands to handle the CBN and the economy as you must be a Yoruba man to get such position . That is why we must blame him for the inflation .
