Senate Announces 37-Member Constitution Review Committee by politicoNG(op): 5:32pm On Feb 14, 2024
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has announced an over 37-member constitution review committee on the 1999 constitution to be chaired by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin.

The committee would also comprise one lawmaker from each geopolitical zone and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The committee, in particular, will review the laws in the area of artificial intelligence, state police, among others. and is expected to be inaugurated next week Tuesday.

Quest For State Police
There have been clamour for state police as Nigeria grapples with worsening security challenges such as kidnapping and banditry.

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had on Monday, restated their position on state policing, as the solution to the country’s worsening security situation, lamenting that Nigeria is “almost on the road to Venezuela”.

Also, regional socio-political groups such as Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Middle Belt Forum, and the Northern Elders’ Forum, have repeatedly called for state police as solution the myriad of increasing security challenges confronting the nation.

Already, states in the South-West geopolitical zone have formed the Amotekun while their counterparts in the South-East also created state-owned security outfit Ebube Agu. The Benue Guards has also been operational in Benue State in the North Central while states like Katsina, Zamfara and other bandit-prone sub-nationals have also come up with similar state-established outfits.

However, these outfits have not been effective as anticipated as they don’t have the backing of the Federal Government or the Presidency while states continue to demand that Amotekun, Ebube Agu and others are granted license to bear assault rifles like AK-47 to confront lethal gun-toting marauders.

What Nigerians want is not 37 man constitutional review committee but a national conference for all tribes to gather and work out a document. Or. They review President Jonathan's national conference Buhari said it belongs to archives.

The current leadership of the APC don't have the political will to truly reform major misnormal of this country.

Two major constitutional review I look forward to is the Local government Autonomy and Autonomy of State Judiciary

When you people go there, ammend laws to protect big men instead of institutions.

Later you'll be crying when a bigger man starts dealing with you.

Power is transient.
Ask PDP and the likes of Melaye.

A word is enough...

Constitute a committee. Allocate funds. Spend the funds. Sweep the report under the carpet. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Nice one.

The state police was rejected by the NASS during the last administration. I hope they pass it this time around.

My fear is just that the governors should not flop in handling those police and make crime skyrocket now and now come back to blame FG for allowing state police in the first place.

Every policy is good on paper in Nigeria. Naira float removal was the main song everyone was singing only to come and start blaming the president after seeing the effect of their darling Naira float.

This is the beginning of the end of Nigeria !!!
Can you imagine Super Cop Salisu caught in LAGOS and expect someone in the North to believe you huh

Can you imagine the notorious Evans - the kidnapper to be released for prosecution in Osun State or in LAGOS by Anambra police.

Can you imagine Oyo Police to arrest an Ipob agent on the run from Ibadan to Enugu huh
Can you expect police in Ilorin to allow a Muslim suspect and take to Abia state for prosecution huh
All we need is a total overhaul of the Nigeria Police Department 🚓🚨

Constitutional amendment is never going to end the agitation for a new one.

37 members to spend 1 billion just to discuss minimum wage. Yet one idiot onanuga is telling us that Nigeria is the poorest country on earth.

President Buhari worked on it but our useless state governors rejected it at state assemblies
Re: Senate Announces 37-Member Constitution Review Committee by onuman: 7:15pm On Feb 14, 2024
Ritual since 1999. Allocate funds to a committee members to waste.
Nigeria deserves a Sovereign National Conference not amendment of a constitution not drawn by the people but by Arewa military dictators to legit the fraudulent political structure. The
National Assembly can't amend the constitution because the Assembly is overpopulated by Arewa legislators derived from the excess and undeserved number of 20 states proliferated in the Arewa region by northern military dictators.

2billion naira will be budgeted for this 37 man committee of nonsense

Just like 1billion was asked for the minimum wage committee, with 500m already released while Nigerians are dying of hunger and starvation

Artificial intelligence to be deployed by numbskulls.

The citizens are beginning to compete with goats and cows over grasses and artificial intelligence is what you dullards are constituting a committee over?

Just wait until you hear the amount set aside for this imbecilic committee to stage this stand-up comedy.

Useless people from A-Z.
