Why Not Open the Border so as to Crash the Prices of Goods Drastically,Nigerians are really suffering.
If we should should freely allow Rive in the price will crash to #15 k and average household will be able to afford.
Imagine a plate of Rice sold for #1000.
No matter how hard the Economy of the forest is a Lion can Never Eat Grass.

Re: Food Crisis: No Plan To Establish Price Control Board - Tinubu by DeLaRue: 7:07am On Feb 16
The rentiers he referred to are powerful people who hang around government corridors looking to be awarded import licences to bring in rice and other commodities.

These people may be encouraging hoarding in order to create even more shortages in the hope that their friends in government will give them lucrative exclusive licences to import.

Mr Tinubu is a Lagos boy afterall. He is countering them one by one.

Consider this:

- One Emir publicly said his people were hungry and effectively chastised the President and openly embarrassedthe President's wife.

- A couple of days later, another one said he could no longer contain the anger of his people and that the President must do something.

- Just a few days later, the VP said the government would establish a Commodity board.

Can you spot what appears to be a coordinated attempt to bump the President into certain actions.

The VP has no authority to announce major economic policy on his own volition. A major economic policy involving the setting up of a Commodity board with potential for wide ranging consequences has to be debated, evaluated, and coordinated across several departments of government not least the Ministry of Agriculture, Finance, the Presidency etc.

A VP cannot just announce policy, and I think the President's rebuke about letting those in charge of economic policies do their job was targeted at the VP.

The VP needs to be careful. Mr Tinubu is ruthless.

Also, Southerners need to put their smart hats on and be able to read between the lines. In some ways, Mr Tinubu is battling influences who want things to remain as it is so their decades-long rentier interests are protected at the expense of the masses.

There is no need to establish new regulatory agencies because there are many of such agencies in the country

Mention one.

P.S. No such agency exists. If it does, why have the agency staff been idle?

Many Nigerians want to import food and everything under the sun, yet they want a strong Naira.

We can't have it both ways.

Either the country wants to import most of its food and go bankrupt in a few years time when we run out of dollars, or we buckle down now and address our food shortages with local solutions.

The choice is ours.

I'm against Foreign goods and services but why not we import now work on our Security, and make Fertilizers cheap, and accessible to all.
We can do this for a year so that the cost of food will be cheap

No agency can control food prices across Nigeria. It won't work.

Nigeria of 1970s and 80s when there were Commodity boards is different to today's Nigeria. In those days, people feared government, were generally more compliant, and not as mischievous.

Today's Nigerians are different. They'll beat up and attack Commodity board employees or devise a thousand and one ways of circumventing any price control. Commodity board employees will likely start collecting bribes and turn a blind eye.

Some ideas look good in theory, but are bound to fail in practice.

How are you reasoning at all, this is a very sensible move.

When you regulate food prices, you kill the incentive to farm and do business in agriculture, by doing so you kill the agricultural sector for good.

When you open the border for importation you give foreign exchange priority: Dollar might get to 5,000. The food prices will still be high and your agricultural sector will still be dead because at the end of the day some people will buy foreign rather than local.

How does opening our land border give priority to "Almighty Dollar" ...

Is it that you don't know or you forgot Nigeria transacts with neighbouring countries in their local currencies before ....e.g to buy items from contonuo you convert to cepha and even ghana you convert to cedis, back then "dollar" didnt monopolize our market/economic

Before now Nigerian land borders were open, food items among other things were very cheap and Naira was more valuable than cepha or cedis but since we closed our land borders, what have gained

almost everything come in through the seaport that gives so much credence to dollar as means of payment

Becos of wat we go eat today spoil tomorrow for our children, enough of does benefiting from the country money while other re suffering, the same set of rich people dominating our economy from the beginning still today and u re still poor till today. If government is try to change it they will be the one promoting different kind of bad news every where just to make thing worse when they knw Nigerian people no get sense to think on there own. Pls let reason on our own. I want a Nigerian that produce no import, A Nigerian will better free education for my children dat I will not labor to pay school fees. I want a better 🇳🇬. It not hard to bring down the prices of goods and services.
1. Let's stop taking our crude oil abroad to be refined abroud and be bought back at higher price. Build more refinaries and modernize the ones we have. This will help bring down the prices of fuel, desil and gas which will go a long way in reducing our cost of living and helping businesses and enterprises springing up which is going to increase local production and reduce cost of production thereby reducing prices of goods and services
2.Provide constant electricity. This will help businesses and enterprises reduce cost of production which which will resull in reduction in price of goods and services.

Just these two action is just what Nigeria needs to reduce cost of living and boost the quality of naira. Every other thing is tertiary. It is not rocket science.

Is this not the two major things obi promised, but the northerners voted against him

Them never start to the suffer

Re: Food Crisis: No Plan To Establish Price Control Board - Tinubu by JB4life: 8:37am On Feb 16
Tinubu knows that price control is not possible for commodities not produced by government, just like telling private universities how much they will charge as school fees.

Second , importation of food is not easy nowadays, because of extremely high cost of USD making imported food to be far more expensive than locally produced ones .

If there were cheaper foods out there ,then there would have been no exporting of foods like maize, soyabeans, beniseed, etc.

Solution to Nigerian economic crisis is increased security, aggressive production of goods and services, especially farm products, and curbing corruption.

May God have mercy on us.
