As much as this idea sounds great due to insecurity, it will just make governors mini tyrants. I hope they put enough checks mechanism in the law that would set it up to mitigate abuse. APC governors will just be using state police to rig elections. In fact, I suspect the reason they are pushing for State Police is to have enough touts that would help execute 2027 elections seeing that nobody in his right senses would vote for them except their brainless supporters. 88 Likes 8 Shares |

Clueless senators, ready to rubber stamp the president or a prominent elite. They are not even aware they represent their constituencies, they have not discussed state police with the people who elected them. Tinubu mentioned state police yesterday, the whole senate woke up today, and they are ready to "approve" it. Presidential, legislative and the judiciary should be holding each other accountable, to provide checks and balances. But in Nigeria, none of that exists.... Possible problems would be: 1-Potential for political interference and corruption. 2-Inadequate funding leading to poor resources and training. 3-Fragmentation of law enforcement, causing coordination issues. 4-Risk of abuse of power without strong oversight. 5-Exacerbation of ethnic and regional tensions. Start slowly 80% federal police and 20% state police,Gradually over 6 years pullback till we have 10% Federal and 90% state, But there should always be federal oversight, Nigeria is too polarized to have every state having their own police. If this government should turn to state police overnight, They are removing the subsidy on state security. We are still in the turmoil of removed dollar and fuel subsidy. Anyone suggesting state police now is being delusional. 22 Likes 6 Shares

A welcome development, the ease in chain of command with a rapid reaction to every undignified action but the caveat is these state governors would want to use this newly acquired power for their own selfish gains. Say oppression cum witch hunting of opposition within the state. Anyways this is what states need now, more numbers in the force who knows the terrain and can give whether herdsmen, kidnappers, bandits and armed robbers alike a run for their money. Also there should be checks in place because some communities, for example in Jos, that have experimented with the local vigilantes ( Community police, Hunters association) have also experience case of extortion and criminal activities on the populace in those areas though nothing extreme but you know it always starts from a drop. 10 Likes 4 Shares |

If signed into law, these present crop of legislature would practically be immortalised. Their names will be written on the sands of time. It has its downside though. Governors will become minigods. For example, someone like Fubara can declare Wike wanted, place a bounty on his head and make him go on exile. By and large, State Police is the major answer to our insecurity issues. The humongous benefits far exceeds the potential abuse. Issue of killer herdsmen, banditry and kidnapping will be non-existent because indigenes will be the state forcemen and Governors will be the true CSOs of their states. But then, will the Northern caucus whose states depend almost solely on FAAC vote in its favour? 28 Likes 5 Shares |

Penguin2: The only way to keep politicians in check is to ensure INEC is independent of political influence. Civil societies that are free from political/partisan influence (ASUU, red cross etc) should be involved in setting up INEC every election year as it is done in proper democratic countries 2 Likes 2 Shares |

malali: Don't be a US ass licker, my guy. I'm not even sure you follow the US politics as you'd want us to believe. Which US senator or Congress person goes back to his or her constituency to ask questions? Even the constituents are online lamenting some of the high-handedness of their elected officials. Let's be honest, US is not the idea example in this regard. 11 Likes 2 Shares |

malali:maybe you are the clueless one here, every smart Nigeria knows security issues are local issues which means police has to be very local, state policing is not even enough we need local government police and we need forest rangers too… so relax don’t just criticise every good policies because you don’t like the president 20 Likes 5 Shares |

I don't like Tinubu o. In fact, I don't like One-Nigeria as a construct. I like the tribes and the indigenes respectively, but the composition of all these to form one giant country created by an european terrorist is just a worry to me. That said, if Tinubu can fully pursue state police and find ways to influence the Senate, that's a step in the right direction. That's the beginning of devolution of power. This new CP of a guy named Lagbaja is a Yoruba man. If there is unrest in the South East, a Yoruba man will now go there and bring in forces and you know na, some South East indigenes may be killed or arrested. Before u know it, it may look like victimisation. If Nigerian police forces were very professional, maybe it would have even been better. All these make me cringe. Just like if a white police officer roughhandles a black man. As blacks, we have this feeling that we are being victimised even though the white police officer may truly be professional. But in this nigeria, our case is even better than blacks and whites of countries like U.S.A etc. because we are indigenous by nature. We have our ancestral lands. So let everyone face their own lane. Let Ijaw police officer police ijaw community. Let Berom do the same. Same goes for Igede, Urhobo, Ejagham, TIV, Baruba, Bini, Igbo, hausa, beri, Kamuku, Zabarma, Bussawa, and of course, the gallant Yoruba nation. 18 Likes 1 Share |

Hehehehe nothing can work in Nigeria until true federalism or separation. Who is going to appoint the state police? Where does FG intervention stops?? How can state be controlling police and federal controlling Army and other departments, even when they are both under FG they fight shoot and kill themselves. State governors will start using them for political purposes and silencing oppositions, naija na joke! 1 Like |

I don't support this nonsense about creating state police, it will create more problems...incumbent governors will start using it to haunt political opponents, it will also lead to more divisions along tribal lines 2 Likes |
