AIR FORCE OFFICER FOILS ROBBERY ATTEMPT BY 'ONE-CHANCE' OPERATORS IN ABUJA, SUCCESSFULLY RESCUE VICTIMS
A serving Nigerian Air Force (NAF) officer, Air Commodore John Ijudigal, has successfully foiled a robbery/kidnapping attempt by suspected criminals popularly known as 'one-chance' in Abuja. The incident occurred on 14 February 2024 at Accra Road, Wuse Zone 5, leading to the apprehension of 3 of the suspects and the eventual rescue of 2 of the kidnapped victims.
The incident unfolded at about 7.28pm as Air Commodore Ijudigal was commuting home in his staff car after work, when he suddenly came across a distressing scene: An Abuja-painted taxi (Mazda 323, registration BWR 232 XB) reversing on high speed, with terrified passengers inside screaming for help. In pursuit of the taxi was a black Toyota Land Cruiser. Instinctively, Air Commodore Ijudigal immediately joined in the pursuit by using his official vehicle to block the escape route of the criminals. The driver of the 'one-chance' vehicle, in a state of panic, then collided with Air Commodore Idjudigal's official vehicle, resulting in significant damage to both cars. The impact caused the 'one-chance' vehicle to skid into a nearby garden. Following the collision, Air Commodore Ijudigal promptly exited his vehicle and chased after one of the occupants of the 'one-chance' taxi, who had fled into a nearby bush. With the assistance of onlookers gathered at the accident scene, the driver of the 'one-chance' vehicle, along with 2 other suspects (a male and a female), were apprehended, while 2 female victims were rescued. Subsequently, Air Commodore Ijudigal contacted a nearest police post and personally ensured the 3 criminals were handed over to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Mr Benneth Igweh, at his office.
In his comments, the FCT Commissioner of Police commended Air Commodore Ijudigal for his courage, highlighting that his intervention not only foiled a robbery/kidnapping attempt but also played crucial role in apprehending criminals who have constituted a security risk to law-abiding citizens of the FCT. The Commissioner further praised the senior officer's act as a demonstration of bravery and unwavering commitment to public service. According to him, “The swift and decisive measures taken no doubt averted a potential tragedy, reinstating confidence in the security forces.”
The Chief of the Air Staff , Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has since commended the senior officer for his bravery and act of selfless service. Air Commodore Ijudigal is a former NAF Deputy Director of Sports and currently the Deputy Director of Logistics at the Defence Headquarters.

BREAKING BARRIERS: NIGERIAN ARMY SENIOR OFFICER APPOINTED AS DEPUTY FORCE COMMANDER IN MINURSO WESTERN

It was a groundbreaking moment for Nigeria and the African continent when Brigadier General Gabriel Olufemi Esho made history as he was officially appointed as the Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). This prestigious position not only marks a personal achievement for Brigadier General Esho but also signifies a significant milestone for Nigeria, as he becomes the first Nigerian to hold such a position within MINURSO. In a colorful ceremony, Brigadier General Esho took over from Commodore Faustina Boakyewwa Anokye from the Ghana Navy.

Brigadier General Esho hails from Ondo State in western Nigeria. From a young age, he showed great determination and an unwavering commitment to serving others, which led him to pursue a career in the military. After graduating from the prestigious Nigerian Defense Academy as a member of 46th Regular Course with an honorary degree in Mathematics and a masters degree in Strategic Studies, his dedication and exceptional leadership qualities quickly garnered attention. Throughout his career, Brig Gen Esho displayed fierceness, resilience, and a remarkable grasp of strategic military operations. His ability to think on his feet and a deep understanding of complex regional dynamics made him a natural choice for various peacekeeping missions across Africa. His stellar track record soon captured the attention of the United Nations, which recognized his incredible potential and appointed him to MINURSO.

MINURSO was established by the UN Security Council in 1991 with the primary objective of overseeing the referendum on self-determination for the people of Western Sahara. The mission has long been regarded as one of the most challenging, yet crucial, peacekeeping operations in the world. Brigadier General Esho's appointment as Deputy Force Commander not only recognizes his exceptional military skills but also highlights the UN's commitment to diversifying its peacekeeping forces. As Brig Gen Esho assumes his role, his priority will be to strengthen the mission's mandate and ensure the safety and well-being of the local population in Western Sahara. His vision for MINURSO includes actively engaging with the Sahrawi people, fostering dialogue, and promoting trust within the communities. Brig Gen Esho firmly believes that sustainable peace can only be achieved through understanding and collaboration.

Reflecting on his accomplishment, Brigadier General Esho expressed deep gratitude for the support he has received. He emphasized the importance of diversity within global peacekeeping missions, stating that representation is essential for meaningful and lasting change. Undoubtedly, his appointment will serve as an inspiration to aspiring Nigerian military personnel and young individuals across Africa. As the first Nigerian to stand tall in the role of Deputy Force Commander in MINURSO, Brigadier General Esho is undeniably a trailblazer. His appointment not only embodies Nigeria's commitment to global peace and security but also paves the way for a more inclusive and representative future for peacekeeping missions worldwide.

With Brigadier General Esho at the helm, MINURSO will undoubtedly see a renewed spirit and an empowered force working towards peace and reconciliation in Western Sahara. The highlight of the event was the transfer of baton/handing over between the outgoing and in-coming DFC which was witnessed by the Head of Mission and Special Representative of the Secretary-General Mr Alexander Ivanko, Force Commander Maj Gen MD Fakhrul Ahsan and other top management staff of the Mission as well as Military Observers and Civilian Staff.

MNJTF SEEKS MORE COLLABORATION WITH CHADIAN AIR FORCE

In a bid to enhance its operations within the Lake Chad Basin, the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has reached out to foster collaboration with the Chadian Air Force. This initiative was highlighted during a recent courtesy visit by th Force Commander, Major General Ibrahim Sallau Ali, to the Chief of Air Staff of Chad, Lieutenant General Idriss Amine on 21 February 2024.

Major General Ali extended his gratitude to the Chadian Air Force for its support of the MNJTF's mission. He emphasized the significant role that air power has played and continues to play in the ongoing multinational efforts. The Force Commander also briefed Gen Amine on the MNJTF’s broad range of operations, indicating both kinetic and non-kinetic efforts aiming at stabilizing the socio-security landscape of the Lake Chad region.

Responding, Lieutenant General Amine gave assurances of bolstered support to the MNJTF. He reflected on the history of cooperation, acknowledging that the Chadian Air Force has been a consistent ally to the MNJTF since its formation in 2015. Gen Amine expressed his commitment to enhancing this relationship and assured Major General Ali that the Chadian Air Force is prepared to intensify its operational support.

The pursuit of synergy between the MNJTF and the Chadian Air Force is a step forward in consolidating the counterinsurgency and stabilization efforts within the Lake Chad Basin. Given the region's complex security challenges, amplified by the activities of insurgent groups, the pooling of aerial capabilities is paramount. This collaboration signifies a concerted effort to deliver a decisive blow to insurgent operations, thereby promoting peace and security for the affected communities.

NIGERIAN ARMY ENGINEERS DELIVER ZUNGERU DOUBLE CIRCUIT TRANSMISSION LINE

The Sappers Engineering Nigeria Limited (SENL), a subsidiary of the Nigerian Army Engineers, has successfully delivered 5 No Tower 132 KV double circuit transmission lines, as part of a significant contribution to the power infrastructural development of the country. The project was awarded by the China National Electric Engineering Company (CNEEC) and spans the Tegina-Zungeru corridor in Niger State.

The scope of the project included clearing of right of way, tower alignment cum excavation and blinding/stub setting. Others are reinforcement work, concrete work, backfilling and erection of towers. It is worth mentioning that the project is 100 percent completed and has been handed over to CNEEC in fulfilment of the obligations of the contract.

Expectedly, the project will have substantial impact on the country's power sector, as it will improve electricity supply and boost industrial development. Additionally, it will play a crucial role in flood control, as well as the development of fisheries and agriculture in the region. It is important to note that the contract for the construction of the 5 No Tower double circuit transmission line was awarded to SENL in 2023 due to the security challenges experienced around the Zungeru general area of Niger State.

The Nigerian Army is committed to contributing its quota to the socio economic development and progress of the country as it continues to deploy its special capabilities to support the nation's growth.

MULTINATIONAL JOINT TASK FORCE INTENSIFIES OPERATIONS IN THE LAKE CHAD REGION

The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has significantly stepped up its clearance operations within the Lake Chad basin, aiming to strengthen free movement and rejuvenate economic activities across the region. This initiative has led to an encouraging trend, with multiple terrorists surrendering and the interception of a major arms haul meant for insurgents’ use. From 10 to 20 February, all 4 Sectors of MNJTF recorded various successes which portrayed the surge in troop effectiveness through the surrender of terrorist elements, offensive operations and curbing of arms smuggling.

Consequently, troops of Sector 1 MNJTF in Mora, Cameroon, triumphed in a notable engagement at the locality of Soueram. This offensive resulted in the neutralization of 2 Boko Haram terrorists and the seizure of 92 linked ammunition belts, enhancing the safety of the area and disrupting the terror group's supply lines.

Complementing this success, on the 10th and 19th of February 2024, 2 Boko Haram members each surrendered to troops in Sectors 2 and 3, stationed in Litri, Chad, and Doron Baga, Nigeria respectively. The items recovered from these 4 repentant insurgents included a collection of arms and ammunition, significantly consisting of an AKM Rifle, an AK-47 Rifle, 3 magazines, and 29 rounds of 7.62-millimetre Special Ammunition.

The MNJTF's persistence in offensive campaigns brought additional victories, with notable operations conducted by the troops of Sector 2 Bagasola, Chad. During a high-impact offensive at the locality of Tchokou, a Lake Chad Island, the troops inflicted casualties on Boko Haram elements and recovered 3 "teke-teke" canoes among other terrorists’ logistics items. Furthermore, in separate operations on 19 February 2024, troops recovered 5x 155 millimetre High Explosive Shells used for making Improvised Explosive Devices, debilitating the operational capabilities of the terrorist factions in the region.

In a concurrent strategic move, the Chadian Air Force, guided by reliable intelligence, conducted a successful air strike on 20th February 2024. The mission targeted Boko Haram strongholds along the southern rim of Lake Chad, near the Chad-Cameroon-Nigeria border, resulting in the neutralisation of several terrorists and the destruction of terrorist equipment on waterways. Several terrorists were seen jumping into the Lake from their boats and are believed to have died.

In Sector 4 Diffa, Niger Republic, capitalizing on precise intelligence, the troops effectively disrupted an arms smuggling attempt north of Nguigmi near the Niger-Chad borderline on 10th February 2024. Their timely intervention led to the confiscation of a substantial arms cache comprising 6 x AK-47 rifles, 11 magazines, and 50 x rounds of 7.62-millimeter ammunition, dealing a substantial blow to the clandestine network supporting the insurgency.

Sadly, despite these achievements, 2 soldiers, one each from Nigeria and Chad paid the supreme price while 3 others sustained various degrees of injuries. We commend their gallantry and pray for the souls of the deceased to rest in peace. The MNJTF remains devoted to its mandate of restoring peace and security while fostering the conditions necessary for economic growth and the free movement of people within the Lake Chad basin. These recent achievements underscore the task force's resolve and effort in confronting the challenges posed by terrorist activities. The MNJTF will continue its comprehensive approach, combining military action with collaborative efforts to support affected communities in overcoming the threats to regional stability.

TROOPS NEUTRALIZE INSURGENTS KINGPINS, RECOVER ARMS, AMMUNITION IN ONGOING OFFENSIVE IN KADUNA STATE

Troops of the Nigerian Army operating in 1 Division area of responsibility have in continuation with ongoing operations further neutralised insurgents and recovered more firearms and ammunition in encounters with insurgents in the general area of Igabi, Giwa and Birnin Gwari Local Government Areas of Kaduna State. Troops in response to recent insurgents' attacks against civilians in Igabi and Giwa Local Governments projected ongoing operations to flush out the insurgents from these areas and bring succour to the people.

While on a fighting patrol along Maganda-Dausayi - Mugaba axis, troops came under fire from insurgents who employed rustled herds of cattle as shields while they engaged the troops with direct fire. The insurgents whose number could not be ascertained fired several shots at the troops from the cover of the herds of livestock prompting immediate response from troops.

In the ensueing firefight that lasted for about an hour, troops neutralised 2 of the insurgents and recovered 1 AK 47 rifle,1 AK 47 Magazine, 3 rounds of 7.62mm Special , 1 Techno phone, 3 Hilux and motorcycle keys, wraps of substance suspected to be marijuana, tramadol tablets and the sum of 13,200 Naira only.

Unfortunately, in the encounter, some of the rustled livestock used as shield by the insurgents were caught in the crossfire. Troops are still on the trail of the fleeing insurgents and remain resolute on ridding the area of responsibility of armed violence.

In a separate operation, conducted by troops of 1 Division of the Nigerian Army on Wednesday 22 February 2024, the gallant troops successfully ambushed marauding insurgents along the Bada - Riyawa axis on the Kaduna - Birnin Gwari Road. In the encounter, troops neutralized 6 insurgents and recovered 2 AK 47 rifles, 5 AK 47 rifle magazines, 300 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition and 19 motorcycles which were destroyed insitu.

Intelligence sources are reporting that the notorious bandit Kingpin Boderi who orchestrated many high profile kidnappings including the Yauri school girls, Greenfield University and Nigerian Defence Academy attacks was killed alongside another kingpin, Bodejo in the ambush. Efforts are on to authenticate this using other means.

Members of the public are enjoined to continue to cooperate with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies in the ongoing war against terrorism and insurgency in the country.
