Nigeria has failed, must be reformed – Northern Elders Forum chair

The Convener of the Northern Elders Forum, Abdullahi Ango, says Nigerians must go back to the drawing board as the country’s systems have failed to work. Mr Abdullahi, a professor and former vice-chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said this at a book launch titled “ Court and Politics”, authored by Umar Ardo in Abuja on Saturday.

Looking at present reality in the country, everyone, both the leaders and the led have failed the country. This event, to me is an opportunity for us to talk to ourselves about our collective failure as a country.

Today, we’ve just had power failure now, for 64 years we are having 4,000 megawatts, what a shame. 4000 megawatts of electricity is not enough for one big house in another country.

“For those of us who from time to time go to Saudi Arabia on pilgrimage and so on. I should remind you that the Masjid al-Haram, the Makkah mosque uses 18,000 megawatts of electricity daily.

“Here in Nigeria, that is a country with over 220 million people, we are generating 4,000 megawatts of electricity after 64 years of independence. Something is wrong with everybody, everyone. Everyone is guilty
,” Mr Abdullahi said.

He said that Nigeria practised the parliamentary system of government from 1960 to 1966 and later jettisoned it for the presidential system of government.

Mr Abdullahi said that the presidential system was too expensive for the country, as it required lots of resources to run. “The time has come for us to really go back to the drawing board so that all of us can be safe,” he said.

Speaking about the book, he described court and politics as Siamese twins that cannot be separated. Mr Abdullahi said that the book covers the subject of politics, democracy and law, adding that it gave an opportunity to not just legal practitioners and politicians but to everyone to discover what had failed Nigeria and the way forward.

Also speaking, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, described the occasion as one of the forums to discuss the way forward for Nigeria.

Mr Gabam said that many Nigerians had been victims of politics, through court decisions, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) or vote-buying.

He said that Nigerians could not continue to pay nonchalant attitude toward the system, but be bold and take corrective measures to save the country for both the present and future generations.

“At one period or the other, our judiciary was one of the best in Africa. We used to send some of our judges to African countries to train their judicial system,” he said.

The book reviewer, Dakas Dakas, commended the author for his courage and dedication in shedding light on the contentions and contestation in the intersection of the judiciary and politics in Nigeria. Mr Dakas, a former Commissioner for Justice for Plateau, said that the book with 563 pages provided insights into Nigeria’s politics, democracy and jurisprudence.

“Ardo skillfully navigates through the twists and turns of his experiences, offering enormous exploration of the challenges, triumphs and tribulations that bedevil the Nigerian political theatre,” he said.

He said that court and politics not only contribute to our understanding of the complexities within Nigeria’s legal and political spheres but also serve as a cautionary tale and a clarion call to action to save Nigeria.

Mr Dakas recommended the book to students and practitioners of constitutional law, politicians, judges, and all stakeholders who were investing in the vitality of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

The author, a former Special Adviser on Research and Strategy to former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, commended the guests for honouring his invitation.

"Nigeria has failed, must be reformed. Looking at present reality in the country, everyone, both the leaders and the led have failed the country."
Meanwhile this same bastardized Nigeria was ok to this senile old man and his ilks during the disastrous Buhari’s government. What goes around comes around.

Who made it fail? After born to rule mentality that made you support lunatics to handle the ship of Nigeria as long as the lunatic is from your tribe. The ship is sinking and you are now looking for sympathy.

Continue to ignore a qualified captain because he's from the people you love to hate.

COMRADES, I agree with Ango on the following:
The leaders failed because of greed and corruption
The lead failed because of wrong choices during election and
Islamic fundamentalists like him in the north are the cause of backwardness in Nigeria

Tell that to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who paced all over the SW region for about 12 years between 1996 to 2013 asking for political restructuring of Nigeria.
Well meaning people in Nigeria thought that the first step of Bola Tinubu as president should be inauguration of a National Conference (sovereign or not), to restructure Nigeria politically.

I am fully ready to help Nigeria revamp its economy and governance and turn around the fortune of Nigeria within a short period of time.

I am not asking to be made President of Nigeria before I can do this. I am willing to work with President Bola Tinubu's team to achieve this. I am open to discussion, I have a blueprint to get Nigeria to work for all Nigerians but before I can release my full blueprint, the President must give me 100% power to implement my blueprint and I must report directly to the President and no other person.

Below is just a hint of what I have in my economic and governance blueprint for Nigeria's prosperity for all Nigerians.

First, Nigerian Presidents and Governors must stop jumping around the world begging investors to come and invest in the current state of Nigeria with high corruption rate, difficult forex policy that makes it impossible for foreign investors to repatriat their earned profits, zero electricity supply that make production cost so exorbitant, zero security that exposes investors' lives to danger, poor citizen's purchasing power that make patronage very low, and focus on improving these negative indices first and watch how investors will be begging to come into Nigeria.

Investors are not charity organizations, neither are they philanthropists looking for poor people to help, they go to where their investment would bring them maximum profit with little capital investment.

Stop traveling around the world wasting Nigeria's scarce resources in the name of going to bring investors that will never come.

Stay in Nigeria and work seriously on how to:

1.) Improve Nigeria's national security of lives and properties, and make Nigerian lives matter no matter the tribe or religion of who gets killed by bandits or Fulani terrorists or Boko Haram or kidnappers, etc

This can be achieved through State and LGA Police, and also make LGAs fully independent of state Governors, let their allowances come straight from FG and let the election of LGA Chairman and Counselors be held same day with Governors and President and NASS

2.) Improve Nigeria's FOREX liquidity and make it easy for legitimate business owners to send out money for business purposes

3.) Reduce corruption among government officials and civil servants by reducing human interferences through digitalizing most if not all government processes.

4.) Improve electricity supply by seriously implementing the Policy or law that empowers LGAs, States, licensed private individuals and companies to start generating and distributing electricity and selling to interested Nigerians ready to patronize them but at a government regulated rate.

5.) Increase minimum wage of civil servants to like NGN100,000 and create a special wage for healthcare workers like Doctors, Nurses, Lab scientist, Pharmacists, etc

6.) Improve our electoral law by making sure every voting process is directly uploaded from polling units to iREV portal and any polling unit whose result is not uploaded to iREV 2 hours after election is concluded in that polling unit must be canceled.

Do these things and watch investors beg to come into Nigeria to invest without Nigerian President or Governor traveling around the world to beg investors to come into Nigeria

Are you just waking up? Where was Ango in the wasted years of Buhari?

Nigeria has failed because of backward leaders like this same man.

BTW, what does he mean by reform? He should define it. People that are against ordinary state Police are talking of reforms. What reform exactly?

Northerners would rather wage a war than agree to any real reform or restructuring.

Any reform that doesn't take true federalism into factor is lip services or window dressing.
