Protesters were convicted of obstructing administration of justice ie the counting of electoral votes.
DC Appeals has ruled that the law only applies to judicial obstruction of say a court process. Legislative actions don't constitute "administration of justice '.
Why it matters. Hundreds of protesters were found guilty or pled guilty to obstruction. On sentencing prosecutors requested judges to impose 3 times more severe sentences ie enhanced sentencing based on that blocking administration of justice thing. The judges happily complied, a victim was sentenced to two years for just walking into the capitol for a few minutes. He has won his appeal.
The DC court ruling requires the sentencing to be redone.
This ruling applies to hundreds of others who judges and prosecutors conspired to impose very stiff sentences on flag waving protesters.
