What does not being independent have to do with development?? Did they tell you that the British government put all of us in non-development while they were here?? Who built the earliest power plants, motorable roads, universities?? Was in not 1997 Britain left Hong Kong, and Hong Kong is currently one of the most developed countries in the world??
The first power plant in Nigeria was Kainji Dam, commissioned in 1964.

Nigeria’s first university was established in 1962, two years after independence.

The British did a big fat Zero in their time here.

This country only began to develop from the 1960s!

There are people alive today who were FULL-GROWN ADULTS WITH KIDS, when Nigeria gained independence!

This is an extremely YOUNG nation.

SEE, THIS IS THE IGNORANCE I HATE ON THIS FORUM.

This dude just compared Nigeria to UAE!

UAE!

The UAE has 100 billion barrels of oil reserves, exporting 3.2 million barrels per day, with a population of 9 million people.

Nigeria has 37 billion barrels of oil reserves, exporting 1.5 million barrels per day, with a population of 240 million people.

But this guy thinks Nigeria should be “like UAE”.

IN FACT I GIVE UP ON THIS FORUM.
This is the ignorance I hate in this forum. You don’t compare yourself with never do wells and expect to make it. Compare yourself with those that have made it & see yourself starting to be like them. You might not be 100% like them but you’ll be on the path to being like them.
UAE was brought in to prove that age isn’t an excuse. Learn to read and comprehend before saying how ignorant other people are.

It is the HEIGHT OF IGNORANCE and IDIOCY to compare yourself to a country that has 100 times more money than you, by virtue of their tiny population and gigantic oil wealth.

It shows your head is not correct!

If Nigeria will advance, it will NOT be because of oil wealth. The oil income is a PITTANCE for our huge population.

Electricity supply company! grin

Which power plants did they build?

Or you don’t know the British simply imported industrial generators to light up the Ikoyi and GRAs their colonial officials were living?

You guys don’t know anything!

The reason you have ANY modernity around you today is that Nigerians came to power in 1960, and began building the country, from schools to roads to factories etc.

Minus that, you would all be illiterate village farmers and palmwine tappers right now.

There's no such thing as money. It's invention and putting your brain to work that produces prosperity. How many barrel of oil do Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Belgium, Germany have?? If it's all about having natural resources, Congo and Niger should be rubbing shoulders with the likes of France and US. When you rely on outsiders to come with so-called FDI how would you develop??

I can vouch for him that there are some places in Nigeria that see light once or twice in a week. Early this year, I was at asero abeokuta for a week and throughout my stay, I didn't see nepa light. They are fully dependent on solar because of how bad electricity is. I am not counting midnight light here because most times I slept by 1am and woke up by 5am. Belgium and Germany would be starving today were it not for the African resources they looted from the continent at gunpoint.

Australia, New Zealand, are simply relocated western capital enriched by looting Africa and the Southern Hemisphere.

So this whole nonsense about “brains”. Uzbekistan, Albania, and Tajikistan did not loot and rape half the Earth, so they remain poor, even though they are whites.

So they don’t have brains?

It’s about ruthless greed, not brains.

You must be a f0.0l to insult someone over a simple discourse. Say what you have to say & stop showing the world how uncouth you are!

What stops Nigeria from advancing with proceeds from oil? The only problem Nigeria has is corruption. Let there be a death penalty law for corruption/looting of government money & watch how oil proceeds will be invested well.

Because Nigeria has 240 million people, it's harder.

Same issue with India and Pakistan.

Togo and Ghana have more steady light than India.

It is easier, cheaper, and quicker to power up a small country of 5 million to 30 million people versus one of 240 million or 1.2 billion.
I guess u forgot china has steady power, even Russia...una go just dey talk

It's really that simple!

By the way, USA, Britain, Germany, Russia etc have been independent for several CENTURIES, versus Naija's 60 years. It makes no sense saying we should be like them by now.

Imagine comparing yourselves to countries that have been independent for over 350 years!

THE OIL INCOME IS A PITTANCE.

That is the simple point that is like rocket science for you people.

Nigeria’s annual budget for 240 million people is $35 billion.

That includes the oil income!

The US annual budget for its 300 million people is 8 TRILLION DOLLARS.

USA, Britain, Russia, France, Spain, Germany etc are giants. These are the giants you guys should be comparing with an African giant.

Okay if they seem too big let’s come down to Africa. I know Ghana is not a giant in Africa but try & compare Ghana with Nigeria & see how Nigeria is. Ghana beats the African giant hands down on stable power. Even small Togo is doing well.

India is one of the largest power producer on this planet, A few years ago it achieved Power Surplus status, that means it generates more power then it needs.

There are more then 37 power distribution companies that buys from their central grid, if a company is unable to pay central grid on time then ofcourse they will disconnect the power.

I studied there and never in my life has a papercut more then 10 minutes. Comparing that giant to Zoo?
I suggest you dont past such threads that make you look like ignorant, Reply me and i will come with data and stats to keep you quite.

Most developing countries like Nigeria have power supply issues.

It's important that even as we strive to address this knotty issue, we do not lose sight of the fact that it is not a uniquely Nigerian debacle, and is a challenge faced by just about every other developing nation, especially those approaching Nigeria's size and population.

cool cool

Load shedding in India

''In 2022, the state of Rajasthan was forced to introduce load shedding for industrial and residential consumers as the country dealt with the worst power crisis it has seen in years. Parts of India experienced rolling blackouts for up to 10 hours or, in more remote areas, 12 hours a day. Damaging fuel shortages have resulted in the shutdown of three power plants in Punjab alone. Reuters predicts that India will continue experiencing widespread blackouts.''

https://sambadenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/power-cut.jpeg

Load shedding in Pakistan

''Pakistan continues to grapple with prolonged and unscheduled power cuts. The country’s severe electricity crisis has hit both rural and urban areas with Karachi experiencing no power for up to 15 hours and Lahore going without power for nearly 12 hours. Although officials had announced a plan to conserve energy, there does not seem to be any reprieve from prolonged darkness.''

Load shedding in Lebanon

''Lebanon is another country that has been plagued with widespread blackouts. This is a result of an economic crisis that the World Bank has dubbed as one of the “most severe crisis episodes globally since the mid-nineteenth century”.

Fuel shortages and, according to the New York Times, a “dysfunctional” energy sector are to blame for the power cuts. Similar to the situation in South Africa, power outages are simply a part of Lebanese life. In the last year, these issues have resulted in state-supplied electricity only coming on for one or two hours a day........''.

Load shedding in Sri Lanka

''Sri Lanka has been experiencing months of daily power cuts amid an economic crisis, which famously saw thousands of protestors storming the president’s home.

The breakdown of a hydropower plant and lack of diesel fuel has led to an increase in load shedding episodes. Currently, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) cannot meet the country’s electricity demand due to an islandwide lack of electricity supply.''

Load shedding in South Africa

''South Africa has been load shedding for 14 years. 2022 has seen its biggest power crisis reaching up to stage six of its rolling blackout system. Businesses are experiencing power cuts for up to six hours a day and have been warned to expect load shedding for another two to three years. There are two main reasons for load shedding in South Africa. The first is the lack of installed electricity generation capacity that cannot meet the demand, outlined in this article. The next problem is that the available energy is far below the demand for electricity, which is why load shedding occurs.''

So because Indonesia became independent only 15 years before Nigeria and because they're majorly Muslims is the reason Nigeria should be far behind. If everyone has this your defeatist mentality, then we will all believe Nigeria can not be saved.

If what you are using for Indonesia's growth is the fact that it got independence in 1945, then factor in the fact that Nigeria is not only an oil giant but also a gas giant.

And instead of stupidly fighting over access to the crude oil money, you should be diversifying your income sources like your lives depended on it.

Indonesia makes over $27 billion a year exporting PALM OIL.

Why aren’t we doing that?

We even have more palm oil than crude oil!
A part of your argument shows you are beginning to get small sense.

On the issue of oil proceeds have you heard about oil theft in Nigeria? Isn’t that corruption? How then will zero corruption not lead to increase revenue?

On the issue of looking for other sources of revenue, that one isn’t something that we should be told as a nation. Before oil came we were getting revenue from cocoa, groundnut, oil palm etc. even with that we were still doing well. With the discovery of oil we became rich. We are still a rich nation. We could become richer if we end corruption (oil theft, looting etc.). We could also increase our wealth by revisiting cocoa, groundnut, oil palm exportation. Also by controlling the mining of the abundant mineral resources in our country.

I still stand by what I said: Nigeria isn’t poor!
