Most developing countries like Nigeria have power supply issues.

It's important that even as we strive to address this knotty issue, we do not lose sight of the fact that it is not a uniquely Nigerian debacle, and is a challenge faced by just about every other developing nation, especially those approaching Nigeria's size and population.

cool cool

Load shedding in India

''In 2022, the state of Rajasthan was forced to introduce load shedding for industrial and residential consumers as the country dealt with the worst power crisis it has seen in years. Parts of India experienced rolling blackouts for up to 10 hours or, in more remote areas, 12 hours a day. Damaging fuel shortages have resulted in the shutdown of three power plants in Punjab alone. Reuters predicts that India will continue experiencing widespread blackouts.''

Load shedding in Pakistan

''Pakistan continues to grapple with prolonged and unscheduled power cuts. The country’s severe electricity crisis has hit both rural and urban areas with Karachi experiencing no power for up to 15 hours and Lahore going without power for nearly 12 hours. Although officials had announced a plan to conserve energy, there does not seem to be any reprieve from prolonged darkness.''

Load shedding in Lebanon

''Lebanon is another country that has been plagued with widespread blackouts. This is a result of an economic crisis that the World Bank has dubbed as one of the “most severe crisis episodes globally since the mid-nineteenth century”.

Fuel shortages and, according to the New York Times, a “dysfunctional” energy sector are to blame for the power cuts. Similar to the situation in South Africa, power outages are simply a part of Lebanese life. In the last year, these issues have resulted in state-supplied electricity only coming on for one or two hours a day........''.

Power cut, Lebanon

Load shedding in Sri Lanka

''Sri Lanka has been experiencing months of daily power cuts amid an economic crisis, which famously saw thousands of protestors storming the president’s home.

The breakdown of a hydropower plant and lack of diesel fuel has led to an increase in load shedding episodes. Currently, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) cannot meet the country’s electricity demand due to an islandwide lack of electricity supply.''

Load shedding in South Africa

''South Africa has been load shedding for 14 years. 2022 has seen its biggest power crisis reaching up to stage six of its rolling blackout system. Businesses are experiencing power cuts for up to six hours a day and have been warned to expect load shedding for another two to three years. There are two main reasons for load shedding in South Africa. The first is the lack of installed electricity generation capacity that cannot meet the demand, outlined in this article. The next problem is that the available energy is far below the demand for electricity, which is why load shedding occurs.''

Why do you people like comparing this giant of Africa with these kind of countries?

USA, Britain, Russia, France, Spain, Germany etc are giants. These are the giants you guys should be comparing with an African giant.

Okay if they seem too big let’s come down to Africa. I know Ghana is not a giant in Africa but try & compare Ghana with Nigeria & see how Nigeria is. Ghana beats the African giant hands down on stable power. Even small Togo is doing well.

Lots of unelectrified areas in Nigeria and few electrified ones don't even get stable power.

Because Nigeria has 240 million people, it's harder.

Same issue with India and Pakistan.

Togo and Ghana have more steady light than India.

It is easier, cheaper, and quicker to power up a small country of 5 million to 30 million people versus one of 240 million or 1.2 billion.

It's really that simple!

By the way, USA, Britain, Germany, Russia etc have been independent for several CENTURIES, versus Naija's 60 years. It makes no sense saying we should be like them by now.

Imagine comparing yourselves to countries that have been independent for over 350 years!

You will just give yourself unnecessary blood pressure.

China has scaled the fence.

30 years ago it was worse than India.

Don't forget that smaller neighbours like Japan, South Korea, Singapore, etc, all developed fully BEFORE China.

It was due to their huge population.

So large population doesn't mean we won't get there. Just that we will get there slower than our smaller neighbours.

Lol, SA is still 100 times better than Nigeria in terms of electricity. Load shedding is usually scheduled for 2 hours daily except when it’s stage 6 then it goes up to 4 hours.

That doesn't sound like ''100 times better''.

Doesn't even sound like 3 times better.

This post highlighted businesses are going an average of 10 hours a day without power. You're comparing it to this same nigeria where it's common to go a whole month without power? It will never be well with you and PDP goverment and obasanjo.

You believe this 240 million estimate abi?

Electricity generated in some states shouldn’t be put on the national grid. With that it will be easier for most states to enjoy stable electricity. Generate your electricity, power your state & sell what you don’t need to the national grid.

Nigeria being independent for just 60years isn’t an excuse for Nigerians not to enjoy stable power. Don’t make excuses for bad leadership. Nigeria has all she needs to be the giant she claims to be. Nigeria is not a poor country.

UAE gained independence in 1971, less than 60 years ago, not centuries ago. Their leaders are investing their money well while our leaders are looting our money well.

PDP left power almost nine(9) years ago. If those that criticized them couldn’t achieve what they criticized PDP of in eight(cool years, then it is an indication that they aren’t different from the PDP they criticized.

China has a population and a land mass that is way much more bigger than Nigeria yet the Chinese enjoy uninterrupted and affordable electric supply. There’s electricity, water and WiFi access even in remote villages. Make una no dey make excuses for the failure that Nigeria has become; e no make sense one bit. Nigerians would’ve been living better and prosperous lives if our leaders, and politicians hadn’t been inherently corrupt and inhumane. Stop making excuses for the failure that Nigeria has become. As a Nigerian, my greatest desire is to see a better Nigeria in which affordable electric and all the basic amenities of life aren’t considered a luxury for only a few well-off citizens.

Why will India not have a trillion dollar economy with a larger population than AFRICA?

Africa in total has a 3 trillion dollar economy.

As of 2023, the GDP of Africa was estimated at roughly 3.1 trillion U.S. dollars. This was the highest value since 2010 when the continent's GDP amounted to approximately 2.1 trillion U.S. dollars

...

And stop mentioning already developed countries like America.

Do you know the US annual budget?

8 TRILLION DOLLARS.

Indian daily electricity production is 215 GW or 215,000 MW, for a population of 1.5 billion .
Installed capacity is 430 GW or 430000 MW.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/m.economictimes.com/industry/energy/power/indias-power-consumption-grows-nearly-8-pc-to-847-billion-units-in-first-half-of-fy24/amp_articleshow/104254849.cms
Compared to giant of Africa.
Producing 4000 MW with installed capacity of 14000 MW.with a population of 230 million.

A simple Google search has exposed your lies.

You used a one off problem in a poorer state of India as if Indian country as a whole is suffering from

Let's face realistic expectations. Let's know exactly what happening in other countries so we don't give ourselves with high blood pressure. OP made some valid points. For example, people had often unfairly compared us with a small country like Ghana. Indeed, it is easier to power a smaller population than big one. But Nigeria can do much better if not for past vision less leaders that we had and fantastically corrupt politicians. I am looking to this current govt to break the jink of power and other issues. Irrespective of what anyone might say, Tinubu remains the most visionary leader Nigeria has had and Lagos has proven that with it's steady progress when compared to other states. Lagos would have been on 24/7 electricity since 1999 if not for envy. Tinubu was the first to attempt to do IPP for Lagos in 1999 but was frustrated by the Federal govt who said you must feed whatever you produce into the national grid. Now that he is at the Federal himself ,I expect fast electrification of the country. He only needs little time to stabilize his govt then the goodies will start rolling in.
