Because of that, the inevitable long voting lines could disenfranchise hourly workers unable to take time off. Reflecting on the Nigerian election only strengthens the argument for why Democrats harbor concerns about ID-based voting. During the last Nigerian election, many of my non-Yoruba friends in Lagos voiced frustrations over obtaining voting cards. Some, who complained, managed to secure them after multiple attempts, while others never received theirs before the election. Interestingly, I didn't hear many similar complaints from my Yoruba friends and family. Although I lack concrete evidence, I'm convinced that obstacles were deliberately placed to hinder non-Yoruba voters, who were likely to support Obi.

I do believe in ID requirements for voting, but they have to be coupled with very easily, accessible and cost-free ID issuance to prevent electoral shenanigans and disenfranchisement like I think happened in Nigeria. I don't see why those conditions can't be easily met and the whole voting system refined but for Republican intransigence. That resistance stemming from their fear of increased voter turnout.
