123yes: You want to know why? Its because China bans all US SM Giants from operating in China. They would have activated the rule of reciprocity long before now and not wait for many years after penetration of their market before doing this. I guess you don't know that Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X and Co are all banned in China so US doesn't really need any reason to do same to a Chinese company, it's just that they allowed them penetrate tge market for a very long time before trying to stop them |

Kingcalls:Totally false. If you're shown a twerk video and you swipe pass it, you'll be shown less and less twerk videos. The videos you watch completely are the ones that'll be shown to you. Try this for 4 to 5 days and you'll notice a big difference |

obedience4: Absolute bullshit. The TikTok of US users uses data centers in US just to maintain federal regulations. US itself collects data of everyone else through their proxy companies like Google and Facebook, so why are they complaining? If you followed this TikTok case from the beginning, you'll know when US tried to kill TikTok around 4years ago because they saw it growing to be a big competitor to YouTube, which is a US company. This is something the US has always been doing. Now they're trying to force bytedance to sell TikTok to a US company. Foolish country that has refused to learn from their errors. |

wwwihy: Wow, really?! I wonder if millions of Chinese didn't get the message that these services were banned in China because I have seen tons of Chinese with accounts selling their replica merch, hair extensions etc. all across Instagram, Facebook, YouTube etc. I guess millions of Chinese are circumventing the law then because a lot of them definitely have accounts on these platforms. If you have an Instagram account or Facebook account, just search terms like "virgin hair factory or remy hair factory" and see the shit ton of Chinese sellers that pop up...lol |

hotwax: Amazingly, there seems to still be confusion about the supposed US social media "ban" in China. I know some people are manipulating on purpose for political purposes, but some people are falling for it and are still genuinely misinformed. There is no ban whatsoever. There is no law in China that bans American or foreign social media or other internet companies in China, by name or by country. All internet regulations apply equally to all companies operating in China, whether they are Chinese owned or have foreign ownership. No difference. China's internet regulations are not very complicated, at least on the surface, but that is where the confusion is. 1. They require all internet companies operating in China to host their servers in China and keep all data of Chinese users inside China. If Twitter and Facebook want to operate in China, they would have to host the China servers in China and keep Chinese data in China. "But that is impossible!" Impossible is nothing. TikTok is doing this now in the US for the US voluntarily. It is their infamous "Project Texas". It's possible, you see. 2. All companies of course have to cooperate with Chinese law enforcement. This is easy to enforce when 1) is complied with, but Twitter and Facebook specifically refused to do this in the past. In fact they did it when Chinese police reached out to them after terrorist attacks in China (2009 in Xinjiang) and indications that the terrorists used their platforms to plan and execute these terrorist attacks. Twitter and Facebook refused to cooperate. They do not refuse to cooperate with US or European law enforcement, so why is China special, especially on a case which involves terrorism. 200 people in China were killed in those attacks. China probably should have indicted Mark Zuckerberg and then owners of Twitter on terrorism accessory charges, but they didn't want to rock the boat. They'd never be able to collect the evidence so it would just be for show, so they didn't do it. TikTok cooperates with US law enforcement. 3. China, like UK, Germany, Turkey and many other countries has certain content laws. For example, all pornography is illegal in China. It's not an option for companies to include in their Terms of Service, it is a criminal offence to host pornography in China. There are other content laws. For example in the UK it could be illegal to post some images or statements in support of Palestine. Etc. China has its own set. So these have to be complied with as well. US companies like Facebook and Twitter/X simply do not wish to comply with these regulations in order to operate in China. That's fine, but that's not a ban: I want to do whatever I want to do in your country and if you don't let me you are banning me. No. Chinese companies like Weibo, WeChat and ByteDance comply with 100% the same rules. It is indeed part of the reason why ByteDance has created two apps, one for China called Douyin and the other TikTok for the rest of the world. The Great Firewall is simply an enforcement tool. What would be the point of these regulations if one could just go and host their Chinese web site and have offices in Australia and skirt all these regulations. Why is this so hard to understand? Indeed, the Great Firewall is just a border wall. It blocks the web sites that refuse to comply, forcing them to either comply with local regulations or not be in the market. These companies can choose to enter the Chinese market any time they like. it is #DigitalSovereignty I understand the concerns that people in the US have about American data, privacy and so on. But so make laws about that. Make laws about anything you like. You don't like the algorithm, make the laws about the algorithm. The main point is to have the law apply to everyone, including US companies. I think TikTok will be happy to comply (hint: they've already done above and beyond what they are required by law to do). Don't make "No Chinese allowed" laws. I mean you can, and you are, but then don't call yourself a country of laws and supporters of free trade. That's just racism, discrimination and protectionism. 1 Like 2 Shares |
