I heard my neighbor and his wife arguing about the amount of money he gives her for their monthly food expenses. She claimed that the current amount of 80,000 naira is not enough to feed their young family of four. However, he believes that the amount he gives her is for feeding only, and should be sufficient and if more money is needed, she can contribute from her own earnings to cover the cost of utilities such as water, electricity and DSTV bills.

Considering the current high cost of living and inflation in Nigeria, I am wondering what would be a realistic amount of money needed to feed a family of four.

A family that watches DSTV is not poor home

I have four children...I spent close to 3million per annum for my family. Now I had to move the scale up to 5million per annum including house rent.

It is not getting better.

For those who will come here to tell me that I am wasting money,pls avoid me. I can't live in a rat hole just because I want to save money.

I spend base on my net yearly income.

80k is very poor honestly.

A kilo of meat here in Abuja is 5k and 5kilos per week is like #25k

That family is trying sha.

Only the parent of the family of four who " takes note of their monthly spending" can answer that question.


I know how much I spend monthly because I take note of it and it is increasing every month.

So tell the family to get a pen and a paper.

Some of you always ask unrealistic questions on this forum.


Maybe you don’t know there are ”families of 4” that can consume food meant for 10 people. In my place we call them “Ugbebale” (Gluttonians)

Your question cannot have an accurate answer.

Only me spend like 2k perday. That money is small for the family of four. However, it can be managed depending on location. Person that stays in north is different from the person that lives in south in terms of "food" expenditures.

Hahaha i didn't say the family is poor. I was just wondering how much is realistic to cover their feeding monthly. I think for people with Kids, DSTV, GoTv e.t.c is a necessity,

3m to 5m would be 250,000 to 416,000 per month on general expenses. An increase of about %76 or more . Ahhh that is alot. Would you mind breaking down your monthly expenses?

The question is how much is okay...not how much do you spend...
We don't need to hear all these details...
We just need how much do you spend per month and give breakdown...

@Op, there's no fixed amount...
The Husband and the wife should do a break down of what they need per month and how much .. so they can both adjust....
If the woman says the 80k is too small, she should back her claims by giving breakdown of what she use the money for....
If money no dey ,then they should both agree to cut cost.... No be to dey drag the man for neck..

But some men sha are very stingy, once they pay house rent, pay school fees, the remaining expenses na quarrel madam go use Collect am....
And some women sha get wahala.... I've seen a woman using part of Feeding money to do weekly contribution...
She's looking well fed and healthy, the husband is looking like truck pusher ...

This is good advise for people who live close to their village or live close to a village. Back when i lived in my state, i used to buy foodstuff in bulk on market days while Garri, Fish, Crayfish, plantain and red oil was always brought to me from my village which was 25 mins drive from me.

My rent is #1,800,000

School fees per annum #1,400,000.

Feeding is #1,800,000 divide by 12 =#150,000

Feeding per month is #150,000 divided 4 = #37,500.

This is not minding that I have food ingredients at home.

There are much more families that lives and survive base on what they see, for such families 80k could be a huge sum. While some families cannot survive on that amount.

My family for instance see 80k a month as a huge sum. A family of 7. Irony of life

You fall among the category of fortunate ones in Nigeria. Your feeding per month is more then the 2months salary of couples 👫 above. If you even divide it by four, it's more then 4peoples salary per month that is, if we even consider those who earn the minimum wage.

But still on still, we have to survive and try hard to adjust to our earning hoping for better days.

Well, some ladies maybe working and still refuse to contribute just as some men prefer to waste money outside instead of financing his home. Las las, as a man or woman, count yourself lucky if you are blessed with a responsible partner.

In all this, I couldn't help wondering how people with several children are faring. It is well fa.

Women are usually the reason for wasteful spending in this generation, hence I believe men should just provide the much they can afford and let the woman augment from her own earning. I'm sure it is still the man that pays annual house rent, children's school fees and other expenses. Yet he still gives 80k for monthly feeding.

What is the woman doing with her own money Or is she not working and earning? Which would beg the question, what's the need for educating and employing women if they can't spend their own funds on their families I come in peace

Palm oil 5 liters 4,800
Rice quarter bag - let's sha put 15,000
Garri 3 paint 7500

Just rice garri palm and veg oil - 39,300
There goes half of the 80k

Add

Provisions-milk milo, baby food (if there's a baby)
Soups for the month at least 5-6k per soup that's if na management soup and it won't reach 3 days, 3rd day is to add water and scrape.
You will want to buy spag or indomie
But condiments
Etc etc. All these ones is far more than the original 80k.

The wife is right but If they can't afford more than that 80k e no reach fight na rough them go rough am. E go rough sha.

Lots of families are barely getting by, it's nobodys fault it's the economy so you either earn more or reduce the quality of what is eaten.

The price of every single item mentioned on this thread has increased.

So, I don't know what the standard amount should be now. Everything is really expensive.

That is not necessarily true. Having cable TV in a home should be a norm, particularly in this century.

Breakfast for my family of 5 last year alone was 765k in total. Overall, I spent 4.3m on home bills last year.

I don't understand how 80k will do for a monthly upkeep of a family of 4 in this present Nigeria.

Later una go say Nigeria is expensive. I spend more than N6M every month.

Excluding house rent, how much will be spending per annum for a family of 6. Four kids? I believe Lagos will be more expensive than Abuja.
