Many years later when I visited this same man house I see the man, his wife and children all glued to the TV watching cartoons, they even have DSTV subscription, as soon as cartoon is done wifey changed the station to zee world, we also watched arsenal vs Chelsea premiership match in the evening as I visited during the weekend

In my mind I was just swearing for the man, this is same man that nearly ruin our childhood by denying us access to TV even against wards' parents protest

Well, back in the day when Kumuyi came up against TV, TV was a whole lot different than it is now. There were a lot of programmes that some Nigerian christians considered immoral...and there was no way to change the channel

While some christians, like my parents, would switch off the set when immoral shows came on , some like the Deeper life people completely removed TV. And not only deeper life...some christians even oversease removed tv.

What changed? The advent of satellite and digital TV and a mulitplicity of channels.

Instead of immoral and moral shows being shown on one channel...suddenly you had whole channels devoted to clean and whole channels devoted to unclean programming (from a christian perspective). Add the fact that you now have christian channels with christian programming (back in the day, NTA used to have just 30 minutes on a Sunday, until they started selling spaces...and even then it was about 4 out of 12 hours self)...and then you had things like parental control button, which helped a lot with self censorship.

SO, yeah, tv became safe enough for deeper life.

It gets better....people now have a lot more control over what they view. Not like before when it was one channel, and they would show a clean kids programme by 4pm, and a foreign entry at 7.30 where a man and woman are making out and doing y'know stuff in the first scene. The internet has even changed the whole game self...some even say tv may become obsolete.
