PRESIDENT TINUBU MOURNS PASSING OF FORMER LABOUR LEADER, ALI CHIROMA

President Bola Tinubu sends his deepest condolences to the family of Comrade Ali Chiroma over the passing of the elder statesman.

Comrade Chiroma was former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and had held various positions within the trade union hierarchy.

The President sympathizes with the Chiroma family, the organized labour community, and everyone impacted by this painful loss.

Recalling the endeavours of the former labour leader at a trying time in the life of the nation, President Tinubu affirms that Comrade Chiroma stood up for the independence of the NLC and doggedly defended the downtrodden when it mattered the most.

The President prays to Almighty Allah to grant repose to the soul of the departed while assuring the family of the elder statesman of his thoughts and prayers in this moment of grief.

Let's see if I can remember.

Hassan Sunmonu battled the austerity measures of the Shagari Government (which were put in place because of the collapse of the economy in 1982).

Ali Ciroma took over from him and battled Babangida's SAP programme. Because of that, President Babangida, in one of his "is proscribed" speeches (during the 1988 SAP riot) banned the NLC. Ciroma was also detained. By the time that the NLC was unbanned, the Federal Military Government had appointed a sole administrator for the trade union collective. I can't quite remember who the sole administrator was.

There was an election for a new president of the NLC for the first time in many years. Pascal Bafyau won the election, but many people believed that he was imposed by Babangida's Government through dark methods. Many people hated him, but you cannot take away the fact that he brought a lot of innovations to the NLC.

It was during his tenure that the Labour Party was created. He also created the Labour Mass Transit company and built the Labour House in Abuja.

NUPENG and PENGASSON showed Abacha pepper, so he banned the 2 unions and detained their presidents (the hunt for Frank Kokori was epic. He was the only person that showed Abacha pepper). The Abacha Administration also banned the NLC and later appointed a sole administrator for it.

It wasn't until 1999 before the NLC had another presidential election. It was won by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. He led the battle against the Obasanjo Government's attempt to remove petroleum subsidies.

Abdulwaheed Omar took over from him in 2007 and served until 2015.

Ayuba Wabba took over from him in 2015 and his tenure is about to come to an end.

The NLC has just elected Joe Ajaero as its new president.
