The vice president of NERC said said that the Commission is empowered by its Act to ensure that the licenses operating efficiently are allowed to recover sufficient revenue for the capital invested,

The vice president of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Musiliu Oseni, has explained the reasons behind the increase in electricity tariff for Band A customers. The increase, which was announced by NERC earlier on Wednesday, will see customers pay ₦225 kilowatts per hour, up from the current ₦66.

Mr Oseni while explaining this on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday. said that the Commission is empowered by its Act to ensure that the licenses operating efficiently are allowed to recover sufficient revenue for the capital invested, for the operational cost as well as having a return for the investment they have made.

Oseni further said: “What informed the decision actually apart from the position of the Act is in the sense that if you look at December 2023 there was an improvement to the quality of service to January but from January up to date, there was a dip in generation availability.

“What caused that was because there was no review of tariff. The DisCos cannot be mandated to pay for what they have not been allowed to charge and in that case, the payment to generation companies has significantly dipped which affects their ability to maintain their machine and also to pay for gas.

“And if they are not able to pay for gas definitely, they won’t be able to generate not minding the fact that they also need money to maintain their machines.

“So, we are at a point where it is clearly that if nothing is done to ensure that tariff is reviewed so that the market can be relatively liquid the quality of supply won’t improve.” Oseni also explained that the tariff review affects only band A customers because they receive about 20 hours of electricity daily.

He, however, said that before the tariff increase, the Band A category was reviewed down from over 1000 feeders to 481 feeders out of total of 3000. According to him, this is about 20 per cent of the total customers.

“We currently have 800 feeders that are categorised as Band A, but it will now be reduced to under 500. This means that 17 per cent now qualify as Band-A feeders. These feeders only service 15 per cent of total electricity customers connected to the feeders.

“The commission has issued an order which is titled April supplementary order and the commission allows a 235 kilowatt per hour,” Oseni said in a press briefing announcing the new tariff earlier in the day.

Nigerians are facing a dire economic situation as businesses across the country grapple with the challenges of unreliable power supply and skyrocketing fuel costs.Nigeria’s power supply has long been plagued by inefficiency and chronic corruption etc. Yet the constricting policies of the government is simply choking life out of the common man, SMEs and macro industries. Thereby leading to multiple shutdowns

And despite being Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria’s power generation and distribution infrastructure remain epileptic, inadequate and unreliable. In recent times, frequent blackouts and power outages amid high tariffs have become a routine part of life for businesses, disrupting production schedules, leading to losses, and making it difficult to meet consumer demands.

This is further compounded by the recent hike in the cost of petrol that is now beyond the reach of average Nigerian. They will always look at you straight up and lie blatantly without remorse. Wicked and evil people in government.

The Tinubu regime must find every reason to inflict more premium pain on the masses.

Under this calamitous Tinubu regime, It is not just raining; it's pouring on the common man

Bullshit! The government is spending to buy yacht, exotic cars for the NASS, subsiding haj pilgrimage and padding budget, but they always have annoying excuses to justify not doing anything that will improve the live of the common man

They always remove any subsidy on education, petroleum products and an important thing like electricity( power) And you expect investors to come? Meanwhile, this increment will be borne by the consumers as manufacturers will surely incalculate it into production cost.

Can the licence of these power companies be revoked and the companies returned back ro NEPA? We had better supply under the management of NEPA than this current arrangement. We cannot boast of steady power yet you want people to keep paying for your inefficiency. What are they doing with the monies generated by estimated billing? Knowing fully well that people pay for service they did not use.

Only in Nigeria will service providers increase price of service they abysmally render so they can get more funds to render better services.

Same way they said if we remove petrol subsidy there will be more money to go round. The reverse is the case.

Once I'm able to install my solar setup, I'll go completely off the grid.

The power has not been stable cos no review of TARIFFS, see excuse, so every year there should be upward review of TARIFFS. The reviews of tarrif won't improve electricity. Power sector is a legit fraud sector supported by the government

I see... perfectly understandable.

This doesn't affect every Nigerian, only those who are using Band A and thus, have uninterrupted power supply. Good one.

Frankly speaking, government should go further and allow the companies charge what they want. This was what revolutionized the the telecoms industry and the same would occur in the power sector as well.

Apart from substation equipment, Discos rarely maintain other equipment. Electric pole, transformer, fuse, black oil etc. Yet when people contribute to buy such equipment, they force them to do an asset transfer without any arrangement for payback to the contributors.

Nigeria should focus on renewables like solar, wave energy, hydro and biomass at least to power homes while the use of gas should be limited to industrial use.
The use of renewables is cheaper and will create thousands of jobs over time.
Nigeria leaders are incompetent

Well... Increasing the tariff is not the problem at all.

At the end of the day, utilities have always been a luxury since APC took over.

The real problem lies with the affordability of such a high-cost of Power supply by those who really need it, like medium and small-scale businesses.

I think government should first mandate all governmental agencies that are owing electricity bills to settle their bills before considering any increment in tariffs

A constructive response has been given and all you can express is bitter sentiments. Government is owing the Gencos $1.2bn and the Discos 1.3tr Naira.

Can you provide a better option?
