Because imported US crude oil is cheap. What we were importing was expensive REFINED petroleum products.

So the source of the crude is not that important insofar as it translates to cheaper home grown refined petroleum products and energy.

It’s a reversal of western practices in Africa, where they import our raw materials for cheap, then process and export for massive profits.

That’s exactly what Dangote is doing with US oil.

Please what is the landing price of American crude oil per barrel, compared to the Nigerian crude? Do not twist facts.

I agree with you. But, it is outrageous for us to allow Dangote to spend the needed hard currency to import crude oil. It is unthinkable in advanced world, especially when our crude is of good grade sought after by other countries. Haba! The net gain in dollars will fall short of expectations.

180 wasn't the actual worth of the naira back then, it was only pegged by cbn and was using the dollar stored during oil boom to defend it at that price. Now with that there is no way to build the reserve which in turn put us were we are. Tinubu might have his flaws the step he took was a brave one, many people will avoid it and ruin the economy more and also postponing the inevitable.

With the new policy the naira will find it true value and when dangote starts selling, it reduce the pressure on the dollar since we won't be spending dollar abroad to get Petroleum product. I pray some of the reform in the power sector actual bring about the desire changes the economy bounce back.

Dangote is not running a monopoly. The problem with a lot of rich Nigerians is that they don't fancy any investment which may take several years to see returns.
Look at our banks as well, they would rather engage in round tripping than finance industrial concerns.

Importation of crude oil have lesser impact on the exchange rate than importation of refined petroleum products.


With time, about 80% of the crude oil will be sourced locally in Naira ,which will drastically reduce the demand for the dollar. Thus the Naira will gain strenght.

Nigeria has no power the dollar but has power over Naira.

When the exchange rate was $1= N180, the exchange rate was heavily subsidized by the CBN (meaning CBN was selling dollar to Nigerians below the market value).
