The Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, has said that the Tinubu administration is sustaining electricity subsidy for 85 per cent of Nigerian consumers.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said that this re-justifies the administration’s credential as a pro-people democratic government.

He maintained that the recently announced hike in electricity tariffs is only affecting 15 per cent of the electricity consumer population.

The minister spoke at the 4th Ministerial Briefing Session held in Abuja on Friday.

The briefing featured Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu and Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Oseni Musiliu.

The discussion was based on the recently approved tariff review by NERC.

“Misconceptions and concerns around the tariff review are understandable. However, let me reassure every Nigerian that this review is a strategic step towards a more sustainable, efficient, and equitable electricity sector,” he said.

He further disclosed: “It lays the groundwork for significant improvements in service delivery, infrastructure development, and economic prosperity. Our focus must, therefore, remain steadfast on ensuring that the electricity sector’s transformation benefits all Nigerians, supports our industries, and propels our nation towards its bright future.

“You would also recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, into law to further strengthen the governance structure in the power sector and mandate the GENCOs to set aside 5 per cent of their actual annual operating expenditure from the preceding year for the development of the host communities.

Let Disco assign areas to the right band. Most of the areas categorized in Band A are not using expected duration of electricity which is cheating

They have come with another excuse to vilify electricity subsidy and justify the increment. Their excuse for removing subsidy from petrol was corruption, what is the excuse for this one?

There is no fairness in this band A, band Z policy.
Why must I pay higher than any other person when I'm supposed to pay for what I use?
From what I heard, majority of cities under the so called band A are southerners.
Every government policy must favor them

These folks keep inflating costs that doesn't match actualt production.

There is no way that a 5,000 megawatts that is not stable will need trillions for subsidy.

The fair price of electricity in Nigeria without subsidy should not exceed 66 naira per kwh

You are not fighting for the masses!!!

You have opened the masses for massive extortion by all these ineffective DISCOS!

What is the fate of customers without prepaid meters at these so called Band A areas

Have you really checked these areas are truly having minimum 20 hours electricity

The argument that the DISCOS need money for improved infrastructure is flawed, because, what have they been using the so called subsidy FGN have been paying all these years for What improvement

You have just opened us up for ripoffs

is 90bn for Muslim hajj not free lunch? is #153bn SUV and 200m to each senator not free lunch?

does Tinubu, his vice, his chief of staff, his ministers, governors, senate president pay for their clothing, feeding, calls, internet, security, medical bills, accommodation, travelling abroad?

is that not free lunch?

is it "free lunch" when the citizens enjoy it or it is not a free lunch when politicians enjoy it?

if the exorbitant freebies the political leaders of Nigeria enjoy at the expense of Nigeria has not killed Nigeria, why and how should subsidised electricity for Nigerians kill Nigeria?

The tarrif increase only affects about 15%.

I'm on Band D. I buy at the rate of N31 on prepaid meter. We basically enjoy 12 hours: 7am to 10am, 2pm to 5pm, 11pm to 5pm. During the day, I'm not around to use it but only use it to sleep overnight. I don't even use more than 3k electricity monthly but Sir, I fuel gen with probably up to 20k to use in the evening(not even everyday) for just 2 hours. They bring the light 11pm when I'm in bed already. They take it 5am. They bring 7am when I'm preparing to move: that's when I iron my clothes.

Bro, if I see band A at N220, e pay me because it is still cheaper then fuelling generator. The generator noise won't be there anymore. Even noise from neighbour's generators dont allow me to sleep when mine is not on. Baba, I wish to be on band A o.
