Edo is the only state that the true representation of the major tribes in Nigeria, when you them bearing Igbo names, Yoruba and hausa names it doesn't mean they are hausa or Yoruba , they are pure Edo people . Edo is diversified state and very unique.

Are they bearing Yoruba names or they are Yorubas? Akoko Edo are Yoruba whose land happen to be cut inside the boundary of Edo state.

Just as Itsekiris are also in a particular local government (Ajoki, Ikpoba Okha LGA) in Edo that shares boundary with the greater Itsekiri land in Delta State.

Some Yoruba villages and small towns ended up in Edo State due to boundary marked by River Ose.

As a compromise, the local government was called Akoko (Ondo) - Edo local government.

That local government also has several Kogi state affiliated elements on the other side.

I understand that sometime in the late 60's when the mid West was created from Western Nigeria, one of the administrators of the mid West stopped the teaching of Yoruba language in their schools.

Today, Yoruba as a language has more or less disappeared even in most of Akoko - Edo particularly amongst those under the age of 50 as the mixing with people from Kogi has resulted in some hybrid type of languages that is neither Yoruba nor Edo.

As an example, people from Akoko Edo who have not lived in Benin before don't understand Benin language at all. I stand to be corrected.

So, unlike their grand parents, offsprings of Yoruba progenitors in Akoko Edo can't speak Yoruba, but they still have their Yoruba surnames.

They are ok being in Edo State and don't consider themselves Yoruba. But they know their history.
