As big as it is..... But na only 700 mw?

With hydro dams, you can always increase capacity by adding more turbines. 700 MW is the start. I’m sure as time goes by, it can be ramped up.

When Mainstream Energy took over Kainji and Jabba dam, they added more MW to the generating capacity.

I’m sure over time, they will do likewise to this new dam.

This additional 700 should push our generating capacity at full max to about 14,000 MW.

Full max is if all the power generating plants decide to generate at full capacity.

Debt payment according to the minister starts in April, so no excuses and Gencos should ramp up production.

TCN I’m sure is working to modernise it’s infrastructure and make it more robust to transmit power.

I agree. If there isn’t a vandalism act by National Assembly, then they should pass the law. It should be made to punish vandals across Nigeria with prison sentence.

Is this part of Buhari/Kyari Siemens deal? because adonundastand what we’re celebrating again six years after the answer to all our energy issues in this country was signed & sealed. grin

Siemens deal is basically for rehabilitation, expansion and upgrading of transmission infrastructure. Tbh, power sector project is one of the most complex work. Its effect can only be felt when fully commissioned. After Siemens deal around 2018, Nigeria gave Siemens energy company the design specifications that can match our grid's peculiarities and the company manufactured the transformers according to that specifications. After manufacturing, Nigerian Engineers have to fly to either France or Italy where the transformers are manufactured to join the company for factory test to ensure that they are fit. Later the transformers are shipped to Nigeria. It takes more than 2 weeks for each of the transformer to be transported from Ikeja TCN store to any location in the North due to the weight and nature of the transformer.
All Siemens transformers are already installed and most of the transformers are already commissioned with few to be commissioned in few days or weeks, so the fact is the first phase of the project is almost completed and this will only increase the transmission capacity of the grid.
However, in as much as Distribution capacity which still remains 5000MW isn't improved which is unlikely in the nearest future all this effort remain futile for now. Again, the generation capacity is still low because if generated the energy can't be distributed by DisCos due to lack of capacity to distribute that Is why we are in this mess.
So Nigeria's energy problem is complex and it takes long time to solve Engineering problem which requires design, manufacturing, civil work among others.

May it be a success

Mathematically,

$1.3 billion project meets approximately 10% of our need
Therefore, 10 X $1.3 billion = $13 billion should be able to meet almost all our electricity need in terms of generation.

I wish they had judiciously used the "$16 billion dollars" back then to fix this our power problem

Lol. I saw that line in the report and its actually wrong. There is no way 700MW meets 10% of our NEED. The issue is the use of the word NEED. Cos estimates put our national need at 25000MW. Maybe he meant to say 10% of available capcity, cos if we had enough gas, as at today we could generate 7000MW

You’re being circumspect with the truth, my broda. According to Chief Adelabu, the Min. Of Power/Energy, the Seimens deal lay moribund for 6 years after the death of Abba Kyari, and has just been renegotiated for the third time, by the BAT administration last year. Out of ten transformers only five have been installed, and out of ten substations only three have been installed. Non is working yet, as they all have to be commissioned and energized before Nigerians can benefit. I don’t know where you’re getting the timeline of days & weeks from as not even the Minister has mentioned any specific dates.

The more I read what this power minister says, in all ramifications, the more confused I am... From the tariff hike to this news now... Is it that where they live, they actually have constant 24hours light FROM PHCN without using generator or what?

Since the increase in tariff, our light in this area of Ayobo have gone from bad to worse, as in atimes just 2hrs in a day, and those 2hrs will be broken into 5 minutes each... Whereas, at Gbagada (Soluyi/Powerline), our light for that side don go from better to best... Having 24hrs light for days, except on Sunday that they took it for a while before bringing it back

Abeg, IKEDC, remember Ayobo (Makinde) people

Good answer. Let me also educate some people here. There is this common saying that $16bln power project was a scam and the money was stolen. it actually wasn't. Now not saying that in typical Nigerian fashion, some of the money wasn't stolen, but the popular story that the entire $16bln was stolen is a big lie. How do I know this?

I know this because the power plants were actually built!! The reason why they are not contributing much to the national grid is lack of gas.

If you look at all the NIPP power plants on the right of the picture, you see that some of them with installed capacity of 500 - 600MW are only contributing like 5%. The Niger Delta Power Holding Company was the legal entity set up to manage these projects. The projects are:

https://ndphc.net/generation#

Alaoji Power Plant - Rivers (Alaoji isn't on the NERC data below because its being refurbished or expanded by Chrome Engineering)
Olorunsogo Power Plant - Ondo
Calabar Power Plant (Odukpani) - Cross River
Omoku - Rivers
Omotoso - Ogun
Gbarain - Bayelsa
Ihovbor - Edo
Egbema - Imo
Sapele - Delta
Geregu - Kogi

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigerian_National_Integrated_Power_Project

Of course there was more to the $16bln than just power plants. There was also transmission lines, sub stations etc. It was mostly these areas where contractors either didn't deliver or the project was stalled and lots of items lay fallow at the port for many years.

And of course, typical of Nigeria, we didn't plan enough for where the gas would come from!! Nigerian government treated gas as something you just go and buy in the supermarket. Yes Nigeria has plenty of gas in the ground, but the forgot that it has to be drilled for, extracted, processed and sent to these power plants via pipeline. None of that was done, mainly because the domestic price for gas didn't incentivize the IOC's to be drilling for gas and selling it at a loss.

At least this is a government that listens. This project had been there when sani was a senator, what did he do then to accelerate it's completion?? You people should stop being hypocritical.

I pray pray tinubu is able to resolve the legal tussle around mambila plant and then get us to generate enough. With the Siemens deal to take care of transmission and distribution, then we begin to expect stable electricity.
