Yes he needs to tell players to close opponents down. That's why he's the coach. Pattern and tactics of play should be dictated by him not the players.

Man U players are too far from each other when they lose the ball but choke themselves up when they have the ball instead of creating spaces. They give much room for opponents and do not take close marking. With this you need a bit technical player to undo the marker and free his teammates. This has been the highlight of the game so far.
